ini kamoze was born october 9th 1957 at port maria in the parish
of st. mary, jamaica as cecil campbell. ini kamoze says he was
always working with lyrics, like some sort of meditation poetry,
singing along with the radio. around '78-'79 kamoze learned about
rasta, which he sees more of a style of living than only a
religion. he recorded three singles in the early eighties, the
first one, "worldaffaires" was made when marley died. the success
came when sly dunbar got a tape through jimmy cliff with 6 songs
by kamoze. kamoze recorded the six song with sly and robbie, and
made ini kamoze's debut album, called ini kamoze. the first single
released on the taxi-label was "trouble you a trouble me" (1983),
followed by "general" and the first hit "world-a-music". kamoze's
second album "statement" was released in 1984, and his third for
island (with sly and robbie) was "pirate" (1986). this album,
according to sly and ini has become too commercial, competitive
with popmusic. the synthesizer sounds didn't do ini's voice and
melodies much good.
by 1987 the association with island had ended; that year saw the
release of the "shocking out" set. ini had turned producer,
starting his own label "selekta" and hitting with a strong
one-rhythm album name "selekta showcase '89" featuring name-brand
dj's like chaka demus, ninja man, johnny p. and general trees
alongside dancehall vocalists sanchez, pad anthony, carl meeks and
the veteran sugar minott. the first version of "hotstepper" was
recorded for producer philip "fatis" burrell. a new version of
this song ("here comes the hotstepper") became a worldwide hit as
soundtrack for the "pret a porter" movie. on kamoze's next album
"lyrical gangsta" (elektra, 1995) there are much more hip-hop
influences, compared to "pirate" and "statement", which were pure
reggae albums. his music stays conscious though: "king selassie",
don't burn ya bridge.
