Not only do the Immortal Lee County Killers have the
best name in rock and roll, they also knock out their
rhythmic juju with a missionary zeal that's hard to
deny.
Based in Nashville but originally from Lee County,
Alabama, and steeped in the history of the South,
their music sounds like a Delta Blues field recording
forced into a shotgun wedding with Detroit punk and
Southern soul and invested by the ghost of William
Faulkner.
The third in a line of literary-sounding album titles,
These Bones sees the core duo of singer-guitarist
Chetley Weise and drummer Toko the Drifter (he looks
like a hobo and performs blindfolded) augmented by
organist Jeff Goodwin, who pitches their music at a
psychedelic intensity when he lets rip on the Hammond
organ.
When the howl is turned down to a whisper on Lights
Down Low and No More My Lord, the haunting spirituals
that close this album, it's clear that the Killers
have got the licks to tame the blues hellhound and
make it turn any trick they want.
