There are not many pleasantries to be found on this demo
release. At some point in history there appeared the term
"torture doom" in the vastness of the metal scene, it somehow
feels as if the intention expressed through the music on this
release is able to reflect this. All drags on, is considerable
sinister and provides hardly any glimpses of sanity or
niceties. Pissboiler, just as the name suggests, are
surrounded with a certain stench, an odour it is impossible to
shake it off. Even though the music changes its course over
time and with each passing minute in some nuance, there is
always an underlying current in the atmosphere and the
progression that has a lasting effect. It is this that is the
most prevalent and whose dominance could be pointed towards as
core elements. What are we talking about, then?
This debut demo meanders between funeral doom and a twisted
form of traditional doom. It is leprous. As if those
established and charming facets receive a twist in a different
direction, while at others it lacks the dominance to quench
all of those positive vibes. They remain, but are not able to
penetrate too many layers. It is up to them to remain hidden
in the background and lay the basis for the steady and
monotonous progression of the riffs. As such, the underlying
current is surprisingly clear in sound and style, while all on
top if it distorted and twisted and hardly charming had been
stitched upon. Music of such proportions needs time to fully
express itself and to develop their peculiar type, which might
be the reason for the general excess in track lengths. Death
doom with a different type of mood or intention so to speak.
Pissboiler's music is repetitive, leaves little doubt about
the direction and what it tries to express. Definitely
limited, but it is able to leave a certain kind of charm.
Cheerful in some respect, atmospheric and well executed. There
is no chance of things to break out of the flow and direction
in an unprecedented kind of way. The stage had been set for a
depressive kind of music and Pissboiler dare not venture away
from it. Rather the variation in the conception and the
execution only help to insert a deeper sense of frustration
and darkness into the soul of the listener. In style it is not
overwhelming bleakness, yet the music leaves no doubt about
its intention and direction. A peculiar facet are the vocals
and their strangely accusatory expression. Such can especially
be found in the second track of this demo. Whiny pathetic
self-hate is not what this band has in mind. The intense
growling fits ample to the distorted sound of the guitars and
the slow progression of the drums.
All in all, while this demo is definitely able to spark a
certain interest, it comes over as a bit too monotonous at
times, as too forced and little varied. Also a bit more daring
in terms of experiments would have been a nice thing. All in
all, it is still a solid release and good for a spin now and
then.
