▓████▓▌ The Bad Plus' fourth studio record proves that the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ band is better than anyone at mixing the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sensibilities of post-'60s jazz and indie rock. It ▓▌
▓████▓▌ doesn't have a lot of direct competition, however; ▓▌
▓████▓▌ these are orbits that basically don't intersect ▓▌
▓████▓▌ unless forced together. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ A kind of awkwardness occasionally lights up the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ playing of Ethan Iverson, the band's pianist. Jazz ▓▌
▓████▓▌ listeners might recognize the liberated awkwardness ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of Paul Bley in Iverson's style - improvised notes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pour out in an unsteady flow, creating friction ▓▌
▓████▓▌ against the groove and making you focus on the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ power of each interval. Sometimes he uses a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ mock-ceremonial affect, as if he were playing a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ particularly pompous version of Chopin's Funeral ▓▌
▓████▓▌ March; but what he's getting at is subtler. Sooner ▓▌
▓████▓▌ or later the tempo or the dynamics will change. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Prehensile Dream, by the bassist Reid Anderson - ▓▌
▓████▓▌ first heard four years ago on his own record The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Vastness of Space - begins ominously, with a 15-bar ▓▌
▓████▓▌ cycle that suggests a somber Radiohead sequence, or ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music for a ballet, and then repeats itself, the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ piano improvising growing dense and billowing, the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ bass sound dirty and driven up into the mix. And ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the drummer Dave King is an artist of battering: ▓▌
▓████▓▌ His style is sharp, pinpointed, hectic. (Playing ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rock rhythm, King is authoritative, but in jazz, he ▓▌
▓████▓▌ goes straight into a babble of textures and color ▓▌
▓████▓▌ instead of swing.) It's Iverson who contributes an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ indisputable jazz piece: Let Our Garden Grow, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ beginning with a bass solo and referring to I Got ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Rhythm chord changes in an unusual way. The Bad ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Plus likes to work with giant melodies, and in its ▓▌
▓████▓▌ choice of a cover version, there is no ▓▌
▓████▓▌ half-stepping: The band's take on Vangelis' ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Chariots of Fire theme starts with a groove and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ then makes a free-jazz monument of it. Listen to ▓▌
