| Twelve Acousmatic Melodies |
| |
| This gathering of acousmatic moments embodies a kind of |
| meditation, carried out on the whole of my work. Its purpose is to |
| seek forth and to identify specific courses and expressive |
| profiles easy to decipher and close to the art of the melody |
| thanks to their sharpness. It is a process which mingles |
| entomological samples and playful scenography of themes. Neither |
| text nor dramatic background, twelve short forms, melodies without |
| any words (few words only) some of them borrowed from other |
| musical works of mine (Suite en trois mouvements, Le lis vert, |
| Dix Portraits). My aim was to underline, harmonize, orchestrate |
| and amplify them. So, there are highness melodies, timbre |
| melodies, but also meaning melodies, space melodies, things |
| melodies... in fact acousmatic melodies because I wanted to |
| demonstrate that it was possible to find out, by the means of this |
| specific art, a shape/melody which could be to the instrumental |
| melody what the photographic art is to painting. I dedicate them |
| to Michel Chion. |

| Ten Portraits |
| |
| In this composition for tape and three synthesizers, I resumed the |
| french tradition of portrait, and so I chose ten persons among my |
| closest friends. Then i musically illustrated on tape some |
| features of character as I have perceived them. At the beginning |
| forty electronic sequences-game have been recorded, lasting from 3 |
| to 4 minutes, played on different analogic or numeric |
| synthesizers. All these sequences are melodically built upon a |
| same dodecaphonist (!) series. I did not intend to compose a |
| serial work, but it seemed to be very interesting to compare on |
| one hand the serial writing (with its austere and rigorous |
| references) and on the other hand the fancies of moving and |
| fleeting harmonic timbres of electronic sounds specially created |
| for this work. A melodic and harmonic unity results from this |
| option because the treatment of this series of notes has been kept |
| simple in order to keep the freedom of rhythmic play adapted to |
| specific features of each sequence. At last these sequences, |
| gathered three by three (or more) according to the features of |
| character defined for each person, have been superimposed by mere |
| mixing. In this work, neither transformation nor montage nor |
| acoustic sounds... |
