▌ One of nine children, KMC cites ▐
▌ his start in music as a result ▐
▌ of the influence of the sound ▐
▌ that was mainly available on the ▐
▌ airwaves at the time: dancehall. ▐
▌ "Calypso and soca were something ▐
▌ that you only heard during ▐
▌ carnival, so anyone wanting to ▐
▌ be in the music industry usually ▐
▌ really wanted to be a dancehall ▐
▌ artist," he explained. ▐
▌ ▐
▌ This led to songs like King Pon ▐
▌ Top, Mr Energiser, Cyah Take ▐
▌ Horn and Gyal From Yard. But ▐
▌ then, fortunately, in 1997, KMC ▐
▌ decided to try out soca, ▐
▌ bursting onto the scene with ▐
▌ Kaya, Bashment to Carnival and ▐
▌ Soca Bashment; he has not looked ▐
▌ back since. ▐
▌ ▐
▌ Of course the road to success ▐
▌ never runs smoothly: KMC has ▐
▌ faced both high and low moments. ▐
▌ Probably the lowest was the day ▐
▌ that, strapped with hunger, he ▐
▌ resorted to cracking open a dry ▐
▌ coconut in the yard of his ▐
▌ one-room home in Laventille, ▐
▌ putting a KLIM (milk) pan on the ▐
▌ kerosene burner and flavouring ▐
▌ it with only a little end of ▐
▌ curry powder. Now, secure in his ▐
▌ financial stability and fame, he ▐
▌ promises to not forget the hard ▐
▌ times and to assist young, ▐
▌ upcoming artists. ▐
▌ ▐
▌ With over ten albums (including ▐
▌ compilations) currently to his ▐
▌ name, KMC is responsible for ▐
▌ Voodoo, Drunk Man, Concubine, ▐
▌ Party Alliance, Thunderbirds, ▐
▌ X-Out, Stinging Nettle, and Tear ▐
▌ Drop Riddims, amongst others. He ▐
▌ has also produced songs for some ▐
▌ of the leading soca artists, ▐
▌ including Machel, Bunji, ▐
▌ Maximus, Destra, Denise Belfon, ▐
▌ and Jungle. KMC is known for ▐
▌ songs like Doh Want to Know, ▐
▌ Carnival Rags, Rough Wine, I ▐
▌ Come Here to Live, Flopping Up, ▐
▌ Cyah X Me Out and Animal. ▐

▌ Now backed by his band, Red, ▐
▌ White, Black, KMC is a must at ▐
▌ all parties in the soca scene. A ▐
▌ victim of the 'soca mafia', KMC ▐
▌ has suffered from musician ▐
▌ walk-outs, DJs refusing to play ▐
▌ his music and 'technical ▐
▌ problems' with his microphone. ▐
▌ However, despite all this, KMC ▐
▌ has managed to rise above the ▐
▌ fight-down, evident in his 2005 ▐
▌ song Pinky & the Brain; he has ▐
▌ moved above the petty artists' ▐
▌ squabbles that he once enjoyed ▐
▌ partaking in musically. ▐
▌ ▐
▌ 2005 has been a fantastic year ▐
▌ for KMC, not only through the ▐
▌ success of his Party Alliance ▐
▌ and Circle of Love albums, but ▐
▌ also with the success of his two ▐
▌ major hits, Soul on Fire and ▐
▌ First Experience. The success of ▐
▌ Soul on Fire ensured that it was ▐
▌ chosen by Universal Records, ▐
▌ Canada for its Z 103.5 ▐
▌ compilation album of the ▐
▌ station's most-requested songs; ▐
▌ it was the only soca song on the ▐
