It was only a matter of time before producer Tommy Gee and Danish composer,
arranger and saxophonist Thomas Hass Christiensen, aka æThe SocietyÆ
released their debut album. Aptly combining jazz and electronica,
æElectronic BionicÆ is a sublime listen that truly defines the modern soul
sound.
As æThe SocietyÆ, Christiensen, one part of the freestyling æSenor Coconut
ensembleÆ, and Gee, producer of the seminal 1998 release æDrums of
ThunderÆ, have been experimenting with digital soaked jazz since the early
nineties. With an emphasis on soul, their first success was remixing and
producing for PhillyÆs lyrical seductor æUrsula RuckerÆ, this was soon
followed by their first solo release æHowÆs LifeÆ, under the US imprint
æNite GroovesÆ it features vocalist æOvaSoul 7Æ and it promptly propelled
their status within the broken beat []scene.
Working beautifully to weave two similar but differing styles together,
here is a moving collection of classic jazz structures and the more
electronically influenced. Charged with deep rhythmic basslines and
inspirational jamming sessions, this is a haven for devotees of shuffling
beats, whip smart breaks, smokey brass and vibrant vocals.
An album that deserves all of your time, this is one for deep wallowing and
grooving about in. Stand out moments include the brass heavy and utterly
divine æDeep In Your HeartÆ, æQ And A Pt 1Æ offers a sultry combination of
singing and rap, while æSpectacular OpticalÆ illustrates just how well a
technologically liberated piece can work and æHowÆs LifeÆ closes
proceedings in a suitably soul soaked style.
Clearly an album that is all too easy to listen to and enjoy, æElectronic
BionicÆ comes highly recommended.
