The split seven-inch has long been the domain of punk and indie
rockers, allowing multiple bands to share production costs and
recontextualize their music. However, this collaboration between LA's
The Luxury Tax and NYC's Mad E.P. is a full-on techno record.
Their eschewal of the DJ-friendly twelve-inch format preferred by
similar artists is an implicit assertion that their music is perfect
as-is.
The Luxury Tax's "90 Lb. Girlfriend" is a glitchy exploration of
drum & bass and breakbeats, resulting in an industrial showdown between
DJ Krush and a healthy dose of speed. There are no recognizable samples
here: the piece is built of beats and mouse clicks. Likewise, Mad E.P.
follows the stronger techno leanings of artists such as Alec Empire and
Prefuse 73, crafting "Grenadine (Sleipnir Ridaz Mix)" from flexible
ingredients that reflect not only an interest in IDM, downtempo and
hardcore, but also extensive training as a classical cellist.
The songs complement each other well, and as the first of several
promised projects from these musicians, this split is a strong opening
volley. The seven-inch format is a bit pretentious -- what, you don't
want anyone else scratching up your music? -- but forgivable if they're
looking for an audience beyond electronica. Whether or not the gamble
pays off remains to be seen.
