│ Recording information: 1955 - 1969. Known for a ││
│ revolutionary approach to playing that emphasizes block ││
│ chords, British- born George Shearing remains one of the ││
│ most important jazz pianists in history. Shearing is ││
│ captured here during his heyday performing in three ││
│ settings: with his quintet, with a big band, and with a ││
│ rhythm section and string orchestra. Shearing's most famous ││
│ composition "Lullaby of Birdland" is included on this ││
│ compilation. Performed as a dainty mid-tempo swing, this ││
│ track best reveals the pianist's now famous "locked hands" ││
│ approach to playing chords and melodies. Other high points ││
│ include the Brazilian classic "One Note Samba" and the ││
│ salsa-inflected "Cuban Love Song" (the latter features some ││
│ virtuoso conga playing by Armando Peraza). "Cheek to Cheek" ││
│ is performed here with a big band. On this selection, we ││
│ hear a playful brass soli; exciting swoops, blats, and ││
│ punchy syncopations make this tune one of the highlights of ││
│ this collection. "Laura" is another impressive track on THE ││
│ VERY BEST. Blending 19th Century romanticism with jazz ││
│ balladry, this piece is a perfect example of third stream: a ││
│ style of jazz that mixes post-bop with classical music. ││
