this latest 12" ep from bakura on japanese label especial follows
hot on the heels of their recently released 'reach for the sky'
album sampler, and shows tracks from that ep receiving the remix
treatment from recloose, sendai, japan-based hiphop producer dj
mitsu the beats and none other than stanton himself, under his
     domu guise.

on the a-side of this 12", dj mitsu the beats cuts up nicola
kramer's original soul vocal, flitting and scattering it back and
forth before dropping down smooth laidback fat jon-esque hiphop
beats beneath layers of shimmering jazzy moog synths, some vast
yet beautifully warm synth sub-bass drops adding a welcome element
of crunked-out headnod funk to the nu-jazz atmospheres that trail
throughout. there's also a welcome instrumental mix also included
here that's just begging for use as a beats track or mashed
together with the accapella / scratch trickery of your choice.

on the flip, matthew 'recloose' chicoine reshapes 'lately' into a
skanking ragga-tinged slice of clicking broken-beat house that
deftly balances flanged-out reggae horn textures with cavernous
dubstep bass drops and sophie ripley's original rich vocal, which
remains more or less in its entirety in this new version. while
it's perhaps a little less 'jacking' than the sorts of recloose
productions fans of his 'cardiology' album may be used to, it's
certainly on a smooth, deep trajectory similar to that showcased
on his recently-released second album. finally, the absolute
standout bomb here is definitely domu's furiously percussive dub
mix of instrumental track 'bada' which deftly balances jazzy
delicate pianos with slamming fusillades of relentless brazilian
percussion, seismic bass drops swooping their way through a
backdrop of crisp, hard-as-nails breakstep beats, in easily one of
the best domu reworkings i've heard so far (amongst the countless
many:) an absolutely storming remix ep from bakura - no doubt the
sizeable legion of stanton fans will be racing to grab this little
     beauty.
