On his debut album, the extraordinary Colombian
percussionist and coposer Samuel Torres creates a
world of sweet sounds in his original compositions.
Utilizing the seminal rhythms of his homeland, a
long-standing love of song and melody, and the
exquisite sounds of his conga drums and other
percussion instruments, he enriches his passion for
African and Cuban rhythms with a knowledge of
classical composition, elements of jazz and
improvisation, and a lifetime of listening.
Samuel's tunes evolve from a sense of texture and
color. From his early family experience - his
grandfather was a trombonist, his grandmother a
self-taught guitarist and singer and his uncles,
Eddie and Juan Martinez were noted performing
musicians - through his worl with Arturo Sandoval
and Richard Bona, Samuel has absorbed a feel for
solid and diverse rhythmic patterns which he deftly
uses to embellish and support his increasingly
advanced harmonic sense.
Expression is what this music is all about. Says
the artist, "Music was always the main communion
between the members of my family, my friends and
me. It also helped me find out who I am." Like a
painter using a rich palette, Samuel Torres uses
his distinctively gifted hands on the conga drums
to draw sound pictures and tell a story.
