Artists such as Kool Keith, Prince Paul, and Dan the
Automator have added an intellectually abstract dimension to
hip-hop. Deltron 3030, an intergalactic fairy tale starring
Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator, and
turntablist Kid Koala, launches headlong into this dimension
with a fluid and thought-provoking look at a Braver New
World. The Automator, who soundtracked such innovative
hip-hop exploratory ventures as Dr. Octagon's
Octagonecologyst and Prince Paul's Handsome Boy Modeling
School, has outdone himself with the dense, futuristic
soundscape on Deltron 3030. Evidence of the Automator's
classical music background is apparent on the album,
demonstrating the epic flair of a composer. In fact
composition wise, the tracks would fit in well with an
updated version of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The
lyrical aspect of the album is handled by abundantly capable
rhyme warrior Del tha Funkee Homosapien who delves into all
manner of speculative wordbending. Del's satirical
philosophizing is as rhythmic as it is clever. Tracks like
"Upgrade" with the infectious hook "upgrade your brain
matter, cause one day it matter" and the incendiary "Virus"
are apocalyptically spellbinding. This is truly an
exceptional and experimental effort on all fronts. Something
to cheer about for underground hip-hop fans -AMG
