"Memory Column-Early Works and Rarities, MCMXCVI-MMIV"
Most bands with only one full-length under their belts
wouldn't bother releasing a two-disc set of "Early Works
& Rarities" -- and that's assuming they have enough
releasable material to fill that much space. But then,
most bands haven't been as active on the compilation and
seven-inch circuit as Mahogany. Since their inception in
1996, the former Michiganders (now New Yorkers) have
released a staggering number of songs piecemeal.
While these songs were initially released a few at a
time, they were originally written as progressive parts
of a whole, designed to one day be released in album
form (which is exactly what's being done now). It's
always satisfying to get an overview of a group's
evolution by gathering of all their early material in
one place, and doubly so when those songs are actually
part of a considered progression.
The first disc, "Song Cycle No. 1 for Rural Michigan",
contains music recorded between 1996 and 1999, when the
band still lived in the Great Lake State. Mahogany take
a rather academic approach to music-making,
painstakingly plotting out delay speeds and so forth,
and it works for them; "Song Cycle No. 1" sounds
remarkably polished for being the work of a relatively
green band. It's also gentle, repetitive and yes, quite
pastoral. Flutelike female vocals overlay chiming
guitars and fuzzed machine beats in much the same way
that snow blankets a winter cornfield; the outlines left
behind are slightly blurry, but distinct.
"Song Cycle No. 2 for Detroit & New York" could be
construed as more "urban"; its material is from 1999-
2004, the period when the band relocated to NYC. The
arrangements are somewhat clearer -- even rocking, if
such a term can be applied to music as hypnotic as this.
Percussion is an integral part of all Mahogany's work,
but several of these pieces, like the industrial-tinged
"L'ΘphemΘre Est ╔ternal" and the brightly new-waveish
"Bunker Soldiers", take it up a notch, venturing away
from the first disc's slow, dreamy vibe toward something
far dancier, while retaining the lovely drones that
characterize the group's sound.
Mahogany certainly fall into the "shoegazer" category,
but it's obvious that right from the beginning, they
were far more than run-of-the-mill nap-core. The fact
that a "collected works" release can be so cohesive, yet
trace such a clear line of a band's transformation, only
makes us want to see where they'll go next.
