Great live albums are a tough find. Often, by the time record
labels think to record and release live performances the band
or artist has long since peaked, their most epic live shows a
thing of the (unrecorded) past. Yes, there are exceptions-most
notably in jazz-and rock bands like the Fall and the Birthday
Party boast live albums that document their best eras. In the
"new" or "experimental" music genre (so awkward to create a
label for because of its extreme diversity), New York City
performance space The Kitchen has hosted a slew of exceptional
premieres and performances from the likes of Steve Reich, Tony
Conrad, Sonic Youth, and Meredith Monk since its inception in
1971. In an initiative driven by sound artist, faculty member
at Virginia Commonwealth University's Kinetic Imaging Program,
and Kitchen Archivist Stephen Vitiello, recordings featuring
historic live performances at The Kitchen from the mid-'70s to
the mid-'80s have begin to be released as the From The Kitchen
Archives CD series on the record label Orange Mountain Music.
The first album in the series, New Music, New York 1979, acts
as the project's establishing shot. This sprawling, double-CD
epic documents performances by 17 different musicians at The
Kitchen's 1979 summer festival of experimental composition and
performance. There are familiar names-Philip Glass, Pauline
Oliveros, Reich, Conrad-and several obscure ones, although a
distinct concern for the process of both the composition and
execution of this (at times highly un-musical) music evinces a
tightly-curated, coherent program. While the mathematics
driving Glass and ReichÆs phase patterns represent the more
musical end of the spectrum on New Music, New York 1979,
"songs" like Charlie Morrow's "Dream Song/Vision Chant," a
piece where the artist plays the role of "vision singer" and
chants ominously for several minutes before deadpanning
descriptions of the mental specters that directed his
telepathic mumblings give the album a distinctly performative
bent. Such conceits seem to locate Morrow and several other
performers that appear on the album more with the mind/body
interweavings of a conceptualist like Bruce Nauman than with
minimalist visual artists with whom experimental composers are
so often simplistically compared to.
Sadly, contemporary references to "new music" seem to nod to
the Glass/Reich/Conrad/Monk cadre of first-generation downtown
experimental composers without acknowledging the breadth of
the field in the '70s and early '80s, something From The
Kitchen Archives will move toward rectifying.
