       Acid folk, baroque psych or sinister sunshine-pop;
       take your pick, cos Espers are riddled throughout the
       lot! Whilst the title of this album (consisting
       predominantly of covers) may suggest some kind of
       dreadful Glastonbury stall selling knob shaped bongs,
       it in fact refers to a weed which started to grow
       when the members of the band "were making some
       important life decisions". Whimsy alert! However
       don't run to the hills just yet, as Espers have
       fashioned a record which treats a combination of
       traditional compositions and material from Nico, Blue
       Oyster Cult etc. with a dark-hearted operandi that
       Bert Jansch would surely approve of. Opening through
       the traditional piece of 'Rosemary Lane', the 6-piece
       band add a Wickerman fragrance to the outwardly
       innocent sea-shore melodies ("if he's a boy he'll
       fight for the king, if she's a girl she'll wear a
       gold ring"), a trick they repeat throughout 'The Weed
       Tree'. So whilst Durruti Column's 'Tomorrow' is a
       wistful lament and Nico's 'Afraid' becomes the
       slightest of creaking nursery-rhyme compositions, it
       is the closing 'Dead King' (the only original piece
       on the record) which really whets the appetite;
       brimming with a barely tempered yearning and
       intricate folk excursions. Weed out the pretenders;
       Espers are coming.
