I was very pleasantly surprised by this release. The
success of this project apparently depended on the
fact that the 1960's and early 70's recordings by Jose
Alfredo were done on multitrack recorders. Thus, his
vocal were on a track by themselves and could easily
be separated from the original instrumental tracks. In
addition, it seems that the original instrumental
tracks (probably by Mariachi Vargas) were used by
other artists than Jose Alfredo. My guess is that the
producers would record a variety of instrumental
tracks of a new song, have Jose Alfredo come in and
record a vocal for each version. The most successful
one would be used for his release. Then, other artists
in the RCA fold could come in and record vocals to the
unused instrumental tracks and those would also be
released. Now we can here them combined. I found it to
be quite successful and totally enjoyable.
