The thing is, Slam (Philippe Sellam - sax),
Guillaume Poncelet (trumpet, Fender Rhodes), Bilbo
(Pascal Reva - guitar, drums), Balat (Philippe
Balatier - MPC, keyboards) and DJ Speeder Mike
(Michael Chekli - decks) are no ordinary musicians.
In their original respective areas (which covers a
great deal of ground, from French chanson to
hip-hop and jazz), their reputation was already
exemplary. Now, as noJazz, the guardians of an
original concept based on creativity and
eclecticism, their talents more than ever match the
tremendous wealth of goodwill that yields
excitement at each of their appearances.
noJazzÆs modus operandi reflects the autonomy of
punk, the facility of house home-studio production
and a strong community spirit. You might name it ô
D.I.Y.W.F.ö, ôDo It Yourself With Friendsö, since
noJazz have always forged partnerships on every
side. We remember ManguÆs vigorous rap on
ôCandelaö, a potential global Latino hit, and the
contribution Miles DavisÆ legendary producer in the
Columbia years, Teo Macero, made to their first
opus in New York. Later, they extensively toured
the United States, forging a partnership with the
Earth, Wind & Fire team. Maurice White in person
fell under the spell of this combo of wild French
musicians, seeing the energy of the golden age of
funk reflected in their performances.
As a result, their new album was recorded at a
number of prolific sessions in Los Angeles. A
serious noJazz connection grew there under the
guiding hand of Wayne Vaughn, a key figure in
American black music, who quite simply fell in love
with the band. Vaughn û a member of the Brothers
Johnson, his wife a singer in The Emotions û is a
mainstay of the Earth, Wind & Fire family and one
of Maurice WhiteÆs closest partners (among other
work, the two wrote the hit ôLetÆs Grooveö
together). VaughnÆs activism led to encounters (all
based on trust and mutual respect) with other
artists, including the great Stevie Wonder,
violinist Karen Briggs, his extremely talented
daughters, wife and their friends including
multi-instrumentalist, wizard of the decks and
Snoop Doggy DogÆs musical director Terrace Martin,
not to mention a number of musicians and singers
associated with Earth, Wind & Fire. On their side,
the group brought other musicians to the venture:
Louis Winsberg and his flamenco guitar, as well as
Mino Cinelu, who has now added noJazz to his
star-percussionist C.V., featured alongside Sting,
Peter Gabriel, Pat Metheny and Miles Davis. A
special mention too for Veronica Ferraro, who
worked on virtually the entire album with noJazz in
Paris, bringing her mixing talent to the project.
From the first track, the exhilarating ôHave Funö,
Stevie WonderÆs harmonica sets the tone as it surfs
over a sonic jungle of rhythmic syncopation. We
even hear the voice of the genius behind
ôInnervisionsö as he murmurs: ôHave fun, from the
top, to the bottom, to the middle, all of it is
goodöà noJazzÆs tempos hypnotise the listener:
ôFlamingoö with its Hispanic highlights, ôNobody
Elseö and its sensual velvet rhythm, ôWakaö and its
Funkadelic-tribe allusions, and ôCharlie Gets
Wickedö, with its high-energy, revamped New-Orleans
style, music Charles Mingus might well have dreamt
up today...
Familiar with every kind of popular dance music
appealing to the body worldwide, along with the
airy ôAkosuaö, portraying a journey in the East,
noJazz are also capable of taking a new look at
sixties salsa-precursor dance music in ôBoogalooö,
plunging into a pulsating ôJumpö with incantations
dripping with voodoo-funk (ah, that unstoppable
chorus: ôBou-ya-ka bou-ya-ka no limits in my
kingdomö) or elegantly exhuming and reviving
ôAnnaö, a retro first world music hit that brought
fortune to Italian diva Sylvana Mangano in the
fifties!
And the thrills do not stop there. The divinely
mind-blowing ôOne Noteö with its growling trumpet
and ôThe Bridgeö with its abstract, Wayne
Shorter-style whirls of saxophone form a possible
Weather Report heritage. Then the intense ôKoolö is
a historic number in itself: here, noJazz bring
together friends Maurice White and Stevie Wonder
for the first time in their respective careers! The
bonus track is ôLe K du Qö: hot, impassioned lyrics
by Claude Nougaro, with noJazz providing a sound
backdrop, released with his poetic blessings just
before the death of the poet from Toulouse.
Progressive, but true to noJazzÆs roots in
universal groove, the groupÆs current musical
concept will not disappoint fans who have been
following them from the start, early in the year
2000. With killer crescendos, surprise breaks,
surreal ambiences, catchy melodies and infectious
beats, the five musicians have developed a
futurist, progressive swing with tastes of
science-fiction funk, post-electro-jazz and mutant
rhythm ÆnÆ blues with a touch of rock and hip-hop.
Then the title of the groupÆs new album sums up
their philosophy perfectly, an ideal chant to blow
away the ambient gloom: ôHave Funö!
In 2050 or 3025, when historians examine todayÆs
music, they will be struck by the number of
interchangeable performers and flood of pointless
records. But a few authentically-creative artists
will catch their ear, among them noJazz, a band
made up of five musicians exploring uncharted
ground. When they listen to noJazz, the music these
historians hear will suggest the energy of James
Brown and the cosmic vision of Sun Ra, the
precision of the Talking Heads and the
inventiveness of Frank Zappa, the vitality of the
Beastie Boys and the humour of George Clinton, not
to mention the craziness of Gong, the rhythmic
trance of Chic and the zest of Kid Creole! Generous
music, packed with positive vibrations,
transcontinental, full of surprises, simultaneously
