    │release notes.

Although today's generation of fans primarily know him for his rare
groove classics of the '70s with his band Ubiquity, Roy Ayers had
already earned the stripes over a whole decade during the '60s as
one of the leading vibes players on the US West coast jazz scene,
playing with Chico Hamilton, the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and,
famously, with flautist Herbie Mann during a four-year California
residency. The link-up with Mann effectively launched him as a solo
artist - after inviting Ayers to appear on his celebrated 'Memphis
Underground' album, he then returned the favour, producing Ayers'
     three jazz albums for atlantic.

Everything changed for Ayers in 1970 when he moved to Manhattan and
formed an all-new band, Roy Ayers Ubiquity. Taking inspiration from
the emerging jazz-rock pioneers - Herbie Hancock, Miles, Mahavishnu
Orchestra - he embarked on a prolific 12-year period with Polydor,
attracting some of New York's finest musicians including Billy
Cobham, Omar Hakim and Edwin Birdsong. "Back in the day, I used to
be in the studio recording 20 hours a day, all night." Ubiquity
were soon forging their own sound, based more on R&B and funk but
with Ayers' stylish vibes and jazz-based vocal style leading the
     way.

Stylistically, Ubiquity moved in tune with the times, from the
deep, dark ghetto funk soundtrack, 'We Live In Brooklyn, Baby' in
'72 through to the spiritual, anthemic 'Everybody Loves The
Sunshine' (1976), and effortless late '70s funk and disco classics
like 'Love Will Bring Us Back Together', 'Running Away' and 'Sweet
Tears'. And Ayers' secret? "Most musicians count at the beginning,
and never talk to their musicians after that. When I worked with
people, I would say, 'watch the bass,' 'keep it in the pocket.'
That created a feeling with me and the other musicians. It made a
     stronger spiritual connection."

Ayers journeyed to West Africa at the turn of the decade, embarking
on a tour across Nigeria with the Black President, afrobeat
Godfather Fela Kuti. The pair would set up their own label, Uno
Melodic, and record two extended albums together, fusing Ayers'
soul perfectly with Egypt 80 band's sinuous Afro funk.

Ever since, through the UK club scene, perhaps most notably
Dingwalls' mid-'80s 'Talkin' Loud' night, Ayers has remained a hero
and a vital musician, as much for original breaks. Mastercuts doff
their cap to the maestro with a collection from the Uno Melodic
vaults - later versions of 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine',
'Chicago', 'Running Away' and 'Poo Poo La La' are all present and
correct, as is the terrific full length Afrobeat groover, 'Black
     Family'.
