When award-winning acoustic-dance singer/songwriter Lorayne launched
her Web site, little did she know that it would bring her a record
deal. Thanks to an .mp3 download followed by a word-of-mouth
endorsement from music manager Marcel Schooler, the distinctive
vocalist and dual national of Ireland and the US signed her first
recording contract.
"This could not have happened at a better time," says Lorayne, a
mathematician by degree and a songwriter by passion who has recently
returned to health from a life-threatening illness. "I was down for
awhile, but this has really brought my career back out from under
that shadow."
Composing her first songs at age six, Lorayne went on to play guitar
and sing for several alt-rock three-pieces while gaining notoriety as
a solo acoustic performer. She started to attract wider attention
through winning prizes in international songwriting contests,
including the Billboard Song Contest and the John Lennon Songwriting
Contest for her songs Fate and Upside-Down Girl.
Lorayne's acoustic-dance sound, coming from a fusion of her acoustic
pop songwriter roots combined with a love for electronic and dance
music, has resulted in an elegant soundscape that exquisitely
complements her unusual and sultry, Celtic-tinged voice. So much so
that when she successfully inked the deal for several remixes of her
song Something About You with Sweden's eclectic Deeplay Music, record
label head Martin Brodin emailed Lorayne, saying "I LOVE the track.
I've been listening to it so many times now my ears are bleeding."
Lorayne began recording a full-length CD in early 2001 but then her
world literally did turn upside-down: she found that she was
afflicted with the deadly skin cancer melanoma, further complicated
by an underlying environmental illness. For the next two-and-a-half
years, Lorayne fought her way back to health through maintaining a
research-oriented attitude and continuing to write and produce new
music. Drawing on her mental fortitude, she put out an EP, Samples,
in 2003, with all of its songs being signed to non-exclusive
licensing agreements in the US. 2004 proved to be even more of a
turning point as Lorayne signed the Deeplay deal, scored a Number One
on the June .mp3 Dance Charts at myownmusic.de with This is the
Night, a joint effort between herself and German dance producer Frank
DeeFour, and was asked to be a contributing artist for Clear
Channel's Help Cure Breast Cancer charity effort. As well, she won
Song of the Year's September 2004 round in the Electronic/Dance
category. Now in 2005, Lorayne's song Fate has been chosen for use in
Dawson's Creek as part of the show's Season Six Home DVD release.
Gifted by her experiences with an edgy model-thinness and a focused,
deliberate intensity, Lorayne's goal remains firm: writing hit songs
while inspiring and encouraging appreciation from her growing
audience. Look for upcoming new .mp3s in collaboration with producer
Tom White, along with new solo material and remixes featured here at
