Far from your average beat junkie, Backini rides into town once again, this time
on the back of Stephen Hawking's popemobile, for his second full-length
excursion on label du jour Lumenessence.
Evoking images of his beloved 40's noir, suave 50's bebop and 70's pop divadom,
this masterful production continues his life's work to distil a century of the
greatest pop music into a seamless and satisfying whole.
Debut album 'Threads', released in 2003, was a wilfully flamboyant slap to the
chops of the po-faced and the pedestrian. Fusing kitsch samples and expansive
beats, it offered up a veritable cornucopia of playful musical history that
found Backini positioned somewhere between the originator himself Grandmaster
Flash and the mischievous new wunderkind DJ Yoda.
Now in 2005 Re:Creation sees him take the foot off the mash-up pedal a tad and
hone his songwriting craft, moving the emphasis away from the sampler and
towards the synthesiser to great effect. Maybe the overly sympathetic looks from
caring old ladies in charity shops as he tirelessly poured through racks of old
classical records and Top Of The Pops compilations brought about a change. Maybe
it was the near-mental breakdown following the realization that his prized
record collection in fact contained some of the least cool pop singles in
history (we'll spare you and he the details). Whatever the impetus, Re:Creation
is a gleefully off kilter journey straight into the mind of its creator.
