Born in Compton to a mother that eventually fell victim to the crack
epidemic, Young Hootie easily identified with rappers such as Tupac
that he felt spoke to his situation. Young Hootie had been involved
with the street life from an early age, and at age 14, his older
brother, who had up until then been the man of the house, was locked
up, forcing Young Hootie into early adulthood.
Instead of letting this get him down, however, Young Hootie turned to
music and academics. Before long, he was taking his SAT books to
study at a friend's basement studio in between rhyming sessions. Both
of these efforts ended up providing him with more success than he had
originally planned for - the impromptu recording sessions made him an
overnight celebrity in his neighborhood, and his studies landed him a
ticket to Morehouse, the most prestigious historically Black College
in the nation.
Since laying down his first 16 bars three years ago, Young Hootie has
been steadily ripping up the game, and the industry is quickly
starting to take notice. After a positive review from DJ Warrior, he
linked up with Larceny Entertainment, home to T.K. and Mark "Breezy"
Brown, A&R Executive for such rap powerhouse labels as Priority
Records, Capitol Records & Def Jam Records. From then, Hootie appeared
on several underground mixtapes, and soon caught the attention of
mainstream hip-hop media, landing a positive review in The Source's
Unsigned Hype and Best of the Best Mixtapes. His first solo mixtape,
YOUNG COMPTON, moved thousands of units within the space of a few
months, and copies are still circulating.
However, this early success was only the beginning. Soon, mixtape
mastermind DJ Whoo-Kid contacted Young Hootie about appearing on the
upcoming all-West-Coast mixtape, "New West Order". And aside from
favorable placement on Whoo-Kid's own G-Unit Radio (Sirius), Young
Hootie has also graced the on-air studios of radio celebrities Julio G
(KDAY) and Felli Fel (Power 106).
Recently, Young Hootie has also appeared on tracks with industry
heavyweights such as Planet Asia, Strong Arm Steady standout Mitchy
Slick, Aftermath signee Bishop Lamont, Big Wy of The Relativez (on the
BMG release Money Respect Money), and major label prospect El Dorado
Red.
Hip-hop fans don't have to be satisfied with just listening to this
young blood, though, as Young Hootie has been cast in a starring role
in a short film by Daddy Bill, New York Film Academy's Director of the
Year. He's also appeareing in QD3's crucial BEEF series Vol. 3, and
his new video, "On Bloods", is appearing in the next episode of the
popular East Coast DVD Series, Smack.
Never one to forget his roots, however, Young Hootie is also featured
prominently in the West Coast peace anthem, "We're All in the Same
Gang Pt. 2".
"The name of my official album is Destroy and Rebuild, and it's
describing the New West Coast - that's the concept behind it, just
trying to destroy and rebuild our side. Not to disrespect anybody or
the legends in the game-I respect them to the utmost, but it's a new
West Coast with a new look and sound, and we coming."
When Larceny Entertainment starchild Young Hootie rips a mic apart on
a mixtape or guest appearance, the street listens. Not just because his
lyrics, delivery and flow are more on point than many seasoned
veterans of the game, but because real recognizes real, and when Young
Hootie spits bars, they come from the heart.
