| Drum Suite is a unique entry in the Blakey discography. Originally |
| comprised of two sessions - one debuting BlakeyÆs first percussion |
| ensemble, the other with the unit featuring Bill Hardman, Jackie |
| McLean, Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest - this reissue appends a |
| third date including two rare tracks and a previously unissued |
| alternate take by the short-lived group with Donald Byrd, Ira |
| Sullivan, Kenny Drew and Wilbur Ware. Although both of the |
| quintets offer some typically swinging Messenger material, it is |
| the percussion ensemble that makes this disc worth picking up. |
| Papa Jo Jones, Specs Wright, Sabu Martinez, Candido, Ray Bryant |
| and Oscar Pettiford join Blakey for three loosely interwoven |
| pieces. The work begins with the leaderÆs ôThe Sacrificeö, which |
| opens with WrightÆs tympani and SabuÆs Swahili chant and |
| progresses into a rumba that includes a previously excised Ray |
| Bryant piano solo. BryantÆs ôCubano Chantö is dramatized by a |
| group vocal and a series of exciting percussion solos and |
| PettifordÆs ôOscalypsoö features the composer on cello for one of |
| the finest solo outings in all of jazz on that instrument. |

| The all-star lineup on Drum Suite gives the album high marks |
| before one note of music is played. It's a piece of history. |
| Released in 1957, the album merged Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers |
| with several other musical forces that proved fruitful, |
| rhythmically and otherwise. |

| With this reissue come several bonus tracks that had appeared on |
| Originally in 1981, one alternate take, and a full version of ôThe |
| Sacrificeö that wasn't previously issued. The original liner notes |
| from Drum Suite are included, as well as updated notes by Kenny |
| Washington and a booklet with fourteen photos of the artists. |

| As a leader, Blakey gave the world soulful hard bop jazz to |
| remember. ôNica's Tempo,ö for example, begins with his drum solo |
| and transitions into a beautiful uptempo drive that remains |
| propelled by sparks of ôelectricity.ö There was always a vibrant |
| force behind his projects. |
| |
| ôD's Dilemmaö feature's Blakey's cascading snare drum pitches, and |
| he applies pressure to the head accordingly. Donald Byrd and Ira |
| Sullivan give ôL'ilö a light, driving force that showcases |
| Blakey's use of varied textures in order to communicate his ideas. |
| Their cohesive interplay results in a supple hard bop |
| interpretation that overflows with excitement. Both takes of ôThe |
| New Messageö flow with soulful impressions and a light, rhythmic |
| zeal. Blakey's positive outlook always shone through, as he led by |
| example and brought out the best in everyone who served in his |
| army of jazz volunteers. |
