Soars is a reflection and by-product of Eastern Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley;
a fertile creative pool over the past decade, spawning a healthy number of
noise/experimental/punk artists, bands, and venues (Brother JT, Pearls &
Brass, etc). With NYC and Philadelphia in close proximity, it's all too
common for the artist-as-drone to flee one's breeding grounds, leaving the
assiduous worker-bees to tend the hive. Comprised of four long-time mainstays
of the LV's spirited independent community (members of Memes, Goodnight Stars
Goodnight Air, Dark Circles and We Have Heaven), the band's atmospheric
scapes of dream-pop are awash with gauzy hints of Cocteau Twins and My Bloody
Valentine, propelled by lockstep industrial rhythms. While destroying and
rebuilding sonic textures and lyrical myth, Soars mirrors the depth, beauty,
and character of their regenerative post-decay rust-belt colony.

Soars is an amalgam of light industrial noise, psychedelia and ethereal
flight. The textural layers derived from some form of electro-digital sound
seem to come at you from a subtle, yet well-planned production of bass
guitar-effected rhythms by Anthony Perrett, Dave Kresge's enchanting electric
guitar leads and overlays, and an undercurrent of whirring and swirling
keyboard by Briana Edwards; all slightly driven by a techno- percussive
backbeat. Chris Giordani creates the moodiness and atmospheric delight as
vocalist and artistic director. But in the end, Soars is the sum of its parts
with each member integrated into this aural delight. I love side one's
opening ode, The Sun Breaks Every Way But One; simply beautiful. And while
this whole project mesmerizes, side two's Ditches and Figurehead are
masterful. Rather than attempt to analyze each piece, it is best listeners to
be their own active participant. Soars have been compared to a few other
notables; but make no mistake about it, their music is their own. An
inventive and magical reminder that real creativity can come from the most
seemingly unlikely places. Sip your Mateus and drip candle wax on the empty
bottle. It's a birthday. Enjoy!
