│║ Of all the unsigned bands I've covered recently, ║ │
│║ this is the one I'm most happy about grabbing a ║ │
│║ deal - especially from a respectful organization ║ │
│║ like Massacre Records. Frozen Land hail from ║ │
│║ Finland, and boy don't they show it! It's ║ │
│║ probably unfair to mention the obvious ║ │
│║ Stratovarius comparisons that every other critic ║ │
│║ will inevitably identify, but one can't help ║ │
│║ feeling that Frozen Land take their biggest ║ │
│║ inspiration from Kotipelto and co. The first 5 ║ │
│║ seconds of their debut self-titled album will be ║ │
│║ enough for any power metal fan to draw this ║ │
│║ conclusion. Luckily, the newcomers wear their ║ │
│║ influences on their sleeves and display them ║ │
│║ proudly. Influenced this may be, but a clone it ║ │
│║ is not. Frozen Land definitely carve their own ║ │
│║ frosty, icy niche within the realm of catchy, ║ │
│║ upbeat European power metal. This is a strong ║ │
│║ debut, real strong. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ To get the negative elephant in the room out of ║ │
│║ the way first; the artwork, whilst well- ║ │
│║ executed, is not really appropriate for this ║ │
│║ style. I'd rather see that adorning a Skßlm÷ld ║ │
│║ CD or a Viking-themed PC game or something. ║ │
│║ However, this is all forgotten as soon as the ║ │
│║ blazing opening track, "Loser's Game" knocks you ║ │
│║ on your ass with its galloping double-bass and ║ │
│║ soaring melodies. This is old-school ║ │
│║ Stratovarius worship channelled in just the ║ │
│║ right way. The production quality is exactly ║ │
│║ what we want from this sub-genre; a suitable ║ │
│║ amount of reverb, powerful driving drums, that ║ │
│║ sprinkling of keys giving a magical wintery edge ║ │
│║ to proceedings... Great overall sound. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The performers themselves are also on top form. ║ │
│║ Aki Kuokkanen's work behind the kit is a solid ║ │
│║ pillar of excellence, taking us deftly from the ║ │
│║ rapid speedsters like "The Rising" and "Mask Of ║ │
│║ The Youth", all the way down to the slow-burners ║ │
│║ like "The Fall". Guitars and bass may not do ║ │
│║ anything outstanding on this record, but they ║ │
│║ fill out the middle and occasionally provide a ║ │
│║ pleasing solo. Tony Meloni's (great name, by the ║ │
│║ way) vocals are bang on the money. They may not ║ │
│║ be mixed perfectly, but his talents will only ║ │
│║ grow over time and outshine any production he is ║ │
│║ hidden behind. Just listen to how he smoothly ║ │
│║ milks the melody out of the energetic choruses ║ │
│║ like "Delusions Of Grandeur" and the gorgeous ║ │
│║ ballad "I would". ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Structurally, this album is really well put- ║ │
│║ together. Rocketing out the starting gates with ║ │
│║ that familiar vibrancy we expect from European ║ │
│║ power metal, then nailing the mid-tempo anthems ║ │
│║ like "Unsung Heroes" and "Orgy Of ║ │
│║ Enlightenment", and ending with that beautiful ║ │
│║ lament and a totally unexpected cover of E- ║ │
│║ Type's dance hit "Angels Crying". This is the ║ │
│║ sound of a band who are simultaneously taking ║ │
│║ themselves seriously whilst having major fun in ║ │
│║ the process. Flashy keyboard licks, infectious ║ │
│║ choruses, and the occasional hammering riff ║ │
│║ section (see "Underworld (Manala)") - what else ║ │
│║ do you want from a power metal album? Serious ║ │
│║ kudos to Frozen Land for one of the strongest ║ │
│║ debut albums in recent memory. Can't wait for ║ │
│║ more! ║ │
