A powerful album that deals with slavery recorded in 1960.
Featuring Abbey Lincoln on vocals.
The first song "Driva' Man" about the man who finds you if your off
the plantation. It's a super intense song with an killer moody
middle instrumental section where Coleman Hawkins really lets it
go. The whole song has a kind of chain gang, hammer rhythm to it.
Next "Freedom Day" is much more up tempo, mostly instrumental, with
lots of horns. The only song that really swings.
"Prayer/Protest/Peace" is vocals and drums only. It goes from a
proud beauty to full on screams of rage and ends in mellow
exhaustion.
"All Africa" Jazz meets African folk or tribal music (lots of
complex percussion).
"Tears For Johannesburg" Starts with haunting vocals and drums then
a somber melody from the horns and becomes a slow somewhat swinging
jazz dirge.
This is a very innovative and unique album.
Truly a classic!!
