Franz Buchholtz (aka Signaldrift) has evidently
spent too many nights watching odd films on
BBC2... Infused throughout by the kind of
               sun-bleached atmosphere which implies an
off-kilter predilection, 'Set Design' manages to
conjure up a malignant air even at its most direct
and outwardly optimistic junctures. Opening with
'And Yet...' (a frosted set of numbed soundscapes
that wouldn't look out of place in the BOC
paddock), Buchholtz then ups the tempo for 'Yellow
Leaves', but retains the menace; showering a
sprightly electronic bubble of a beat with
out-of-sight washes and haunting vocals. Autumnal
to the max! Elsewhere, 'Dutch Assassin' is an
endlessly inflating slice of post-disco that
manages to cram in references to Blade Runner, New
Order and Slowdive, 'Purple' is a swirl of
diffused aural cloud, whilst the 13 minute epic
'128' ferments the overtly cheerful beats with
               malformed atmospherics.
