     Graham Halliwell: feedback saxophone
Collaborations with: (1) Rhodri Davies, (2) Steve Roden, (3)
     Mark Wastell

     1. Beat
this piece involves the harp being played with two ebows. I
     then made
more than an hours worth of recorded ebow harp material that
     Rhodri
freedom to work with. To construct the piece I decided against
     overdub
techniques and opted instead for a linear construction, giving
     the piece a
My sound contribution was recorded in 2002 heavily under the
     influence
Adnos One. Whilst working on Rhodri's session it became clear
     that these
together beautifully. A rough mix revealed astonishing results.
     Spectral
emerge from the mix that weren't apparent in isolation, - the
     harp affecting
vice-versa. The version presented here is the fourth complete
     mix.

     2. Resonantlighttones Revisited
I was drawn to resonantlighttones (from the CD four possible
     landscapes) because Steve's
original intention for this piece was to use feedback, and I
tried to imagine what it might have
sounded like. I was also interested in Steve's use of looping,
     something I'd never attempted
with saxophone feedback. With the help of my friend Andy
     Butler, who supplied and operated
a Gibson Digital Echoplex, I set about recording a looped sax
     feedback piece that could later
be over-dubbed onto Steve's piece. My intention was to use
     looping not in a repetitive,
hypnotic way but to build single feedback tones into something
     more complex. I wanted to
complement, not copy, Steve's ideas and beautiful sonorities.

     3. Vibra #3
During the +minus tour in Spring 2004 it became apparent that
     Mark's sustained low tones
and overtones from his tam-tam were affecting the saxophone
     feedback in interesting and
unpredictable ways. It felt as though the tam-tam was
influencing the feedback as much as
the sax was. After the tour we decided to further investigate
     this phenomenon. Placing two
condenser microphones dangerously close to the tam-tam to
capture its full tonal range (a
technique we used to record Vibra #1), we set up in fairly
     close proximity to allow the
instruments to influence one another as much as possible. We
     recorded three
improvisations, this being the second and most sublime, and
regard it as the third in Mark's
     Vibra series for tam-tam.
