█░█ While known to many from his time spent drumming █░█
█░█ for such great Canadian groups as Royal City, Sea █░█
█░█ Snakes, Fembots and (at least for one tour) the █░█
█░█ Constantines, Toronto transplant Nathan Lawr is a █░█
█░█ fine songwriter himself and has just self - █░█
█░█ released his second album, Secret Carpentry. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ I may not have ever been aware of Lawr's own █░█
█░█ musical career had it not been for a chance █░█
█░█ Saturday afternoon car ride tuned into the CBC █░█
█░█ last autumn. Catching the second half of a █░█
█░█ concert performance by Lawr, backed by a mini █░█
█░█ orchestra in Toronto, was an amazing discovery. I █░█
█░█ was shocked at the widespread vision of the █░█
█░█ songwriter, who I had only known previously from █░█
█░█ his time spent keeping time for others. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ As glorious as that recording was - a limited █░█
█░█ edition CD of said concert is now sold out, but █░█
█░█ the show can be downloaded online at █░█
█░█ zunior.comùhis new studio album showcases his █░█
█░█ songwriting skills in an entirely different █░█
█░█ light. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ Recorded almost entirely live in the studio with █░█
█░█ his rotating backing group the Minotaurs, which █░█
█░█ includes singerûsongwriter Kate Maki and former █░█
█░█ Tricky Woo drummer Pat Conan in its ranks, Secret █░█
█░█ Carpentry (named for a Gabriel Garcia Marquez █░█
█░█ book) is a raw, immediate recording that is █░█
█░█ reminiscent of artists such as Neil Young, █░█
█░█ Beachwood Sparks and, at times, Will Oldham. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ "When I set out recording the actual record, I █░█
█░█ don't know that I knew what my actual objective █░█
█░█ was," says Lawr of the album. "It just sort of █░█
█░█ formed as it was going along. "Probably the thing █░█
█░█ that influenced how it turned out was when we did █░█
█░█ this MidûAutumn's Night Tour earlier this fall, █░█
█░█ where Kate (Maki) and I and some friends toured █░█
█░█ across the country. Right before we did it, we █░█
█░█ made a CD and recorded two songs each all in one █░█
█░█ day, so we recorded ten songs all in one day. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ "It was very much a flyûbyûtheû █░█
█░█ seatûofûyourûpants, try and capture the moment █░█
█░█ type of thingùdon't think too much about it. Like █░█
█░█ a Neil Young kind of approach, where you have █░█
█░█ what you're left with and that's what you live █░█
█░█ with. We tried to get that kind of feel on the █░█
█░█ record." █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ When asked what made him decide to try and do █░█
█░█ things that way, he said it was at least █░█
█░█ partially the experience of doing the Minotaur █░█
█░█ Orchestra performanceùthe same one the CBC █░█
█░█ broadcastedùthat made him want to strip things █░█
█░█ down. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ "I purposely wanted to make the record sparse and █░█
█░█ I didn't want to add stuff just for the sake of █░█
█░█ adding it. I feel a lot of records these days get █░█
█░█ this glossy sheen over top of a weak song, and █░█
█░█ people rely on crazy orchestration to enhance █░█
█░█ what is not that strong to begin with. I really █░█
█░█ wanted the song to be the song and didn't want to █░█
█░█ get too crazy with that stuff. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ "I like the fact that the record is this bare █░█
█░█ bones kind of thing. I'm really fascinated with █░█
█░█ why things are the way they are, especially when █░█
█░█ it comes to art. You see a painting and you █░█
█░█ think: why does that look the way it does? I █░█
█░█ really like that concept a lot." █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ Lawr is still pretty new to the whole frontman █░█
█░█ thing, as it has only been about six years since █░█
█░█ he started writing and performing his own █░█
█░█ material. He still finds himself sometimes █░█
█░█ thinking about his music from a different █░█
█░█ perspective. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ "It's been a really slow progression, it's all a █░█
█░█ big learning curve for me. The thing is, I keep █░█
█░█ having to remind myself that I'm not the drummer. █░█
█░█ I don't have to keep the beat; there is someone █░█
█░█ else who does that. Trying to learn how to become █░█
█░█ a different kind of musician has been a █░█
█░█ challenge." █░█

█░█ Lawr is doing a short run of dates in Southern █░█
█░█ Ontario in early December in support of the █░█
