         █░█    History has largely overlooked Th' Faith Healers   █░█
         █░█    -- the early '90s guitar band was a textbook       █░█
         █░█    'tweener, perching on the cusp of several scenes   █░█
         █░█    but ultimately falling through the cracks.  Part   █░█
         █░█    of the awesome early Too Pure roster, the British  █░█
         █░█    quartet shared labelmate PJ Harvey's raw           █░█
         █░█    intensity and like Stereolab dabbled in the        █░█
         █░█    hypnotic power of repetition, swapping white-hot   █░█
         █░█    guitar for the latter's analog synths and French   █░█
         █░█    Bubblegum kitsch. Granted, leader Tom Cullinan     █░█
         █░█    got by more on fervor than memorable hooks, his    █░█
         █░█    pyrotechnics were perhaps a bit too metallic for   █░█
         █░█    the shoegazer crowd, and he complicated matters    █░█
         █░█    by spreading the band's output across a bevy of    █░█
         █░█    micro-label singles (although that same tactic     █░█
         █░█    worked like a charm for the 'Lab). Cullinan        █░█
         █░█    eventually expanded his formula slightly by        █░█
         █░█    ditching th' Healers for Quickspace, another       █░█
         █░█    fuzzed-out, female-vocal driven quartet that left  █░█
         █░█    a wider berth for the gently melodic. If th'       █░█
         █░█    Healers can best be described as the Pixies        █░█
         █░█    covering Rid of Me, then Quickspace was Joey       █░█
         █░█    Santiago jamming with Stereolab.                   █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    Cullinan's initial crew was one of those           █░█
         █░█    idiosyncratic lots that caught John Peel's ear,    █░█
         █░█    and the BBC DJ invited TFH in for a whopping five  █░█
         █░█    sessions in just over two years. The final four    █░█
         █░█    are compiled here, the first having previously     █░█
         █░█    been bundled with those of its Too Pure brethren.  █░█
         █░█    And like a lot of bands, the Peel Session format   █░█
         █░█    brings out the best in th' Healers -- retaining    █░█
         █░█    their immediacy while imposing just enough         █░█
         █░█    structure and budget to avert a lo-fi mess. For    █░█
         █░█    this reason, these Sessions are actually           █░█
         █░█    preferable to a greatest hits comp.                █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    The opening three tracks here offer virtually      █░█
         █░█    everything you need to know about Th' Faith        █░█
         █░█    Healers.  "Hippy Hole" brims with pure fury, even  █░█
         █░█    if it consists of little more than two lines       █░█
         █░█    shrieked repeatedly (here's one of the rare bands  █░█
         █░█    that shone brighter the further it pushed itself   █░█
         █░█    into the red). Then comes the turbocharged         █░█
         █░█    Motorik hum of "This Time," followed by the        █░█
         █░█    welding of Roxanne Stephen's best sing-song tones  █░█
         █░█    to Cullinan's guitar mayhem on "Reptile Smile."    █░█
         █░█    The second session drags a bit (perhaps because    █░█
         █░█    they came within six months), and a couple of      █░█
         █░█    goofy covers (ABBA's "S.O.S." and Harry Nilsson's  █░█
         █░█    "Without You") may have been de rigueur at the     █░█
         █░█    time -- think Dinosaur Jr's take on "Just Like     █░█
         █░█    Heaven" -- but fail to rise above novelty.         █░█
         █░█    However, the latter sessions reveal a newfound     █░█
         █░█    bluesy swagger, wonderful bursts of noise like     █░█
         █░█    "Bulkhead," and tee up some unreleased goodies.    █░█
         █░█    Though a mite overbearing in a single sitting,     █░█
         █░█    these Sessions are a worthy spin for both          █░█
         █░█    newcomers to and aficionados of Th' Faith          █░█
         █░█    Healers.                                           █░█
