As a crow circles overhead, austere granite
conurbations clutter the sky-line whilst a
dislocated voice intones the inception of 'the
game...' within which it now appears you're
trapped. Not the new book from William Gibson, but
the opening track on Erast's (aka Nika Machaidze)
'Cyberpunk' LP. Taking the fractured beat patterns
of last album 'Good Air' then fermenting them in a
cask of Ligeti-atmospherics seems to have paid
dividends, with opening couplet 'Cyberpunk' and
'Het' bouncing about with mechanical intent.
Built around a a concept that sees the album paced
like a computer game, the first save point comes
courtesy of 'Raindrops On My Window'; a cascading
flood of somersaulting bleeps+bloops, suspended by
synth orchestras and 'Girl/Boy'-era AFX beats.
Elsewhere, 'QN' is a glorious harp-interlude shorn
of all rhythmical accoutrements, 'Shushanika' is
staccato blitzed business of a Squarepusher
variety, whilst 'End Credits' blows the budget on
some 20ft tall orchestral atmospherics.
Game Over.
