With their last release described by the New York
Time's as "one of the 10 best obscure albums of 2001"
('Overnight' if you're wondering), the now two-piece
Chessie (Stephen Gardner and Ben Bailes) have taken a
four-year sabbatical to return with 'Dual Mode':
likely to be a pretty obscure record of 2006.
Comprised of two new tracks ('Velvet' & 'The
Century'), Chessie have also raided their Xmas card
list and garnered a trilogy of remixes from Dntel,
Sutekh and Basidium - all of whom take on highlights
from the 'Overnight' LP. Kicking off with 'Velvet',
Chessie delve into more suffocating realms than their
previous material dared - feeding an ethereal palate
of muted instrumentation into slow-motion bass and
chiming guitars, recalling the post-rock excursions
of Gardner's previous band Lorelei. Languid in the
extreme, 'Velvet' can't help but quench your thirst
for aural solace; particularly when the fizzing
epilogue of sun-set electronica brings it all to
completion. From this, Dntel's re-fit of 'Eyes and
Smiles' seems positively breezy - taking acoustic
guitars than lashing them wantnly to a pink-hued
rigging of shoe-gaze soundscapes, 20ft strings and
wheezing accordion, before Sutekh gate-crashes the
love in on 'Daylight' for some disrupted electronic
bleaching. Closing the 12" with 'The Century' (think
Arcade Fire collaborating with 65daysofstatic), those
opting for CD get the bonus run-in between '3rd And K
Pt. II' and Basidum; a dark-hearted mediation on the
       original's caliginous charm.
