Mogwai, Friendly, Krafty Kuts, Superstyle Deluxe, Ursulla1000, Skeewiff, Kraack&Smaack, Mole&Aya...
All the tracks from this compilation have been released on limited vinyl, so it's their first
release on cd !
Labrok is now the biggest French breaks label,our artist are now playing everywhere in the
world (Australia, UK, Spain, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Switzerland,
Italy, Canada...) Nominated as best new label for Breakspoll 2003, Labrok is known as one of the
finest funkybreaks label around and the best is yet to come !
At 29, Cedric Benoit aka Cedr'x is since is early beginings in 1993 one of the major figures
of the French electro scene, especially in the South, where he comes from. As a teenager, he
was already Djeing in all kinds of student parties, very popular at the time in his native
city of Avignon, where he still lives. Therefore, he naturally embraced the techno music as
soon as it started to show up in France. He then was part of all the major events that
symbolised its increase in popularity, and its recognition as a full musical movement :
from the first unforgettable parties (Dragon ball, Tranceillusion, Magic Garden...) to the
Paris firt Techno Parade, or the big gatherings like Borealis in Montpellier, Global Techno
in Avignon for the celebration of year 2000, where he shares the booklists with Bj÷rk or Aphex
Twins. He also played in front of thousands of people with the most famous names like Jeff Mills,
Richie Hawtkin, Laurent Garnier or Roni Size.
Having an excellent and improved knowledge of various musical styles, at ease with turntables
(he started playing with his Technics MK2 at the age of 15), Cedr'x can easily go from a techno
progressive set to a breackbeat mix. There's nothing he likes more than creating surprising the
audience by connecting together different styles. Having experienced it in hundreds of parties
everywhere in Europe, he likes to play with the audience as far as it can go. Like no one else,
he knows of to feel the mood of dancers and ambiance. He can get people to dance and party,
whether it be on a snowboard festival, on a beach or in a huge concert place.
His style has evolved from house and techno to more trip hop and breaks sonorities. They today have
his favour. In parties, his great distinction styas eclectism, and he is one of the first to take
part in the fusion movement that is at in progress in electronic musics. People never remain unmoved
hearing his mix whith two or three turntables, sometimes without headphones, and phrased with scatches,
that borrow to hip hop which made so much for his reputation. Cedr'x 's got a lot of influences, going
from the Jeff Mills' Detroit minimal techno to Norman Cook's English big beat. Uncompromising concerning
his musical tastes, but eager to make them know to the biggest audience , he's very open when it comes
to the place where to play. In France or abroad, one can hear his mix in parties as well as in festivals
(Borealis, plages sonores...) concerts place (Zenith in Paris, Rockstore in Montpellier...) clubs
(An-fer in Dijon, Villa Rouge in Montpellier, Batofar in Paris...) or even in the radio,
where he's got plages on the most famous electronic music stations, Paris' Radio FG or Geneve's Couleurs 3.
Cedr'x carreer has gone from steps to steps . In 1998, he's the winner of the DJ contest tour, organised
by Circle Plate syndicate to show the dynamism of the regional scenes, in which 450 DJ took part.
This challenge gave him national and mediatic fame, and a dotation in material. Parallel to his
DJ activity, he was, in 1994, one of the founders of Sound System Shop, which has become a reference
in all the South of France for discs sales and musical material. Logically, the following stape
was the one of production, which he had in mind since a long time. As soon as 1996, he produced
his first maxi. After many contributions on French and English labels, et many parts in compilations,
Cedr'x decided to produce his own sound and the one of other artists by creating in 2002
Lab-Rok Records Label. The first released where "What's a DJ ?", produced by Cedr'x, which was
realeased in spring 2002 and, during the summer "Kito kito ep" produced by the Knockheads.
The Knockheadz were born from his association with Blue Bug, after two ep's produced in 1999
by Supadope and in 2000 on the English label 20:20 D-Vision. In this association, funk culture
meets the art of mixing, in a style that they themselves call "Modern Funk". An hybrid music as
Cedr'x cherishes, that is the same on the following ep, "Burnin' Break" compilation, realeased
last june.
One can find a selection of big beat, breackbeat and techno sounds. With this fist incursion
of a French DJ on in a field that is usually an English one, Cedr'x is resolutely avant-garde in the French production. English have noticed it, since the firt ep's of Lab-Rok are among the best sales of several famous shops. A very promising begining for Lab-Rok Records.

Il est vrai, et il est temps (merci α eux), que lÆ on commence α voir poindre un
peu partout en France de nouveaux artistes, ou naissances de labels, qui chaque jour
ouvrent un peu plus grand les horizons du breakbeat franτais... Parmi ses
instigateurs, il nous est dΘsormais impossible de passer outre un certain label
franτais, jÆ ai nommΘ LABROK, premier label de break franτais. "Break" au sens cassΘ,
Θlectronique, groovΘ, scratchΘ. Une spΘcialitΘ anglaise qui a toujours eu du mal α
cimenter dans nos contrΘes mais que CΘdric Benoεt et son crew distillent avec fraicheur
depuis plusieurs annΘes. BasΘ dans le sud de la France mais ramifiΘ dans les quatre
coins de lÆhexagone, Labrok milite pacifiquement pour un breakbeat aux fondations
solides, forcement influencΘ par les gΘniteurs anglais mais ouvert α des manipulations
pΘriphΘriques comme le hip hop, la funk, le turntablism ou la techno.
AprΦs une premiΦre compilation mixΘe ½ BurninÆ Breaks ╗ en 2002, Labrok Groove est
le premier projet original CD du label, des tracks sortis exclusivement en vinyles, sur
lequel on retrouve tous les activistes de cette famille de producteurs festifs rayeurs
de dancefloors. AprΦs les avoir croisΘs en Espagne, Allemagne, Portugal, Australie,BrΘsil,
SlovΘnie ou RΘpublique TchΦque,pologne, le Crew Lab-Rok se pose aujourdÆhui sur la gravure,
en transit, pour remuer nos tΩtes et tendrent nos muscles fessiers.
Impossible donc dÆ Θviter le phΘnomΦne α prΘsent, pas moins dÆ une bonne dizaine de maxis
sortis sur le label, avec des signatures quasi exclusivement franτaises, dont lÆ essence et
la qualitΘ sont prΘsentΘes ici dans un cd brillamment mixΘ par notre CΘdrÆx national, avec
toute lÆ armada au grand complet, et quand on Θcoute τa, jÆ ai envie de crier α pleins
poumons : FUNK ÆS NOT DEAD !!!
Car cÆ est bien sous le signe du funk que se place cette compilation. DÆ abord avec CΘdric
Benoεt, le boss lui-mΩme, avec ses "What is a dj ?", "Multibass" ou autre "Smockey Bastards"
accompagnΘ dÆ un fringuant Matsa en poseur de scratchs endiablΘs, ou encore sous son autre
pseudo The Knockheadz, projet Θlectro-organique partagΘ avec un certain DJ Blue Bug. Ensuite
avec ceux qui ont Θgalement dΘbutΘ α la renommΘe du label, The Incredible Funky Breakers, et
leur break savamment dosΘ dÆ un jazz/funk unique en son genre. NÆ est pas musicien qui veut,
alors quand ils mΩlent leurs compΘtences acoustiques aux machines, τa fait des tubes
irrΘsistibles comme le fameux "Supa Reeds", le houseux "So Sonic", ou les chemical beats dÆ un
"Vortex Overload" hissΘ en pas moins dÆ une semaine aux premiers rangs des charts anglais.
Toujours du funk avec l Æami Price Cuts, from Australia, avec ½ ThatÆs Right ╗ et
½ Sunday swinger ╗, et plus rΘcemment avec un jeune producteur des non moins talentueux qui
en lÆ espace dÆ un clin dÆ oeil s Æest imposΘ aux yeux de tous, jÆ ai nommΘ Maδlstrom.
IrrΘsistibles "Orange Freaky Fingers" et "Party Biscuits", vos pieds ne seront pas en laisse
sous leurs accents si groovy. Seule exception α la rΦgle, mais qui nÆen est pas pour autant
une entorse α la qualitΘ du label, mademoiselle Flore. Si tant et bien quÆ il faille encore
la prΘsenter, cÆ est elle qui apporte une touche de spontanΘitΘ plus dark α lÆ ensemble, mais
quand ⌠ combien dansante avec son "Boogie Child" playlistΘ par les plus grands. Et lorsque
je disais au dΘbut que lÆ Θclectisme Θtait au rendez-vous, vous vous en apercevrez trΦs vite
avec les breaks hiphopisant des sieurs Prosper & Balda avec leur hit "Walk on a Sushi", pas
encore sorti et dΘjα jouΘ et playlistΘ par deux "lΘgendes" anglaises portant le doux nom
de Plumps DjÆ s. VΘridique !
