         █░█    ItÆs hard for a writer to hear ChicagoÆs           █░█
         █░█    AnomalyÆs ethereal, moody, and downtempo hip-hop   █░█
         █░█    instrumentals and not draw comparisons to DJ       █░█
         █░█    Shadow, RJD2, and the like. Damn near impossible,  █░█
         █░█    really. Not thereÆs anything wrong with that. IÆm  █░█
         █░█    tickled pink to know that the Windy City is        █░█
         █░█    developing its own cadre of instrumental beat      █░█
         █░█    artisans who can be can be called composers as     █░█
         █░█    well as beatmakers. Judging by this fine effort,   █░█
         █░█    Anomaly can stand among the ranks of Maker and     █░█
         █░█    Meaty Ogre as some of the cityÆs best and          █░█
         █░█    brightest hip-hop auteurs.                         █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    One of my favorite aspects of The Long Road is     █░█
         █░█    that itÆs almost like one long song, with the      █░█
         █░█    tracks melting gently into one another. Even when  █░█
         █░█    thereÆs silence between songs, the transitions     █░█
         █░█    are so nice that, if youÆre not paying close       █░█
         █░█    attention, it can be 10 or more minutes before     █░█
         █░█    you realize youÆre on a different track. In this   █░█
         █░█    age of short attention span, ipod-driven           █░█
         █░█    listening, itÆs important that some albums force   █░█
         █░█    us to sit down for several spells. Some of the     █░█
         █░█    pieces shift midway through, forming songs within  █░█
         █░█    songs and blurring the line of where one track     █░█
         █░█    ends and the next begins. "Recognize" goes from    █░█
         █░█    dreamy guitar swirl to beatless, string-laced      █░█
         █░█    tenseness to moody, RJD2-esque beater in a space   █░█
         █░█    of four and a half minutes. "Dust" does a similar  █░█
         █░█    thing, gliding from a sunny, piano-led groove      █░█
         █░█    into a dark, minor-keyed affair with dramatic      █░█
         █░█    strings and soundtracky harpsichords.              █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    The other great thing about this album is the      █░█
         █░█    consistent vibe. Anomaly alternates between        █░█
         █░█    moody, introspective beatscapes and dreamy,        █░█
         █░█    psyche-folk excursions, the latter aided by        █░█
         █░█    healthy amounts of nicely integrated acoustic      █░█
         █░█    guitars. The two tones work well together, and     █░█
         █░█    they even cross over a bit on cuts like the        █░█
         █░█    tender "Devotion," where the thoughtful guitar     █░█
         █░█    work is augmented by flutes and spacy synth        █░█
         █░█    leads. For some great rainy-Sunday-afternoon       █░█
         █░█    flavor, check out the somber "Choose One," the     █░█
         █░█    surging, dramatic "Tuned Out," and the fluid,      █░█
         █░█    melancholy "Unfollowed." On the lighter side,      █░█
         █░█    "Chill," "The Long Road," and "Levels" provide a   █░█
         █░█    blissful soundtrack for when that Sunday sky       █░█
         █░█    clears up around sunset. "People Is Crazy," one    █░█
         █░█    of my favorite songs, almost gets downright indie  █░█
         █░█    rock with its mellow acoustic guitar, skeletal     █░█
         █░█    rhodes and DIY analog synth lines. That is until   █░█
         █░█    some lovely strings and harpsichords come in and   █░█
         █░█    add a bit of soundtrack flair.                     █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    "People..." best embodies the feel of whole        █░█
         █░█    album: touchingly melodic and delicate while       █░█
         █░█    still undeniably hip-hop. Every emotional journey  █░█
         █░█    is underpinned with dusty, chopped-up drum breaks  █░█
         █░█    or, in a few cases, classic 808 sounds that keep   █░█
         █░█    the head nodding while the mind wanders            █░█
         █░█    wistfully. Whether youÆre sauntering down          █░█
         █░█    snow-covered streets or curling up in your living  █░█
         █░█    room window watching the world go by, The Long     █░█
         █░█    Road is essential winter listening.                █░█
