The debut release from Tide opens with the fragile intro, ôFull Enoughö. The
fact that they chose to open with a song about the temptation of suicide is an
ominous sign, but itÆs also a statement of intent: This is not simply just a
collection of songs; this is an Album, something that is meant to be listened to
from beginning to end. ItÆs a roller coaster ride of shattered dreams and empty
promises, tales of regret mixed with stubborn hope and optimism.
ôNever Knows Your Nameö is pure pop bliss, complete with sugary harmonies and
sharp guitars, yet the lyrics spin a tale about a lost soul; ôSatelliteö churns
with pulsating guitars and a tribal rhythm section, yet has a French horn solo.
And the album closer ôCity Tonightö shifts from one polar opposite to the other,
from dreamy to brash and apocalyptic.
ItÆs ambitious to try to cover this much ground in one album, let alone a debut
album. They could have easily taken the safe route with a collection of pop
songs that all vie with one another for a spot on your radio dial. Instead they
chose the high road and it makes for a very interesting ride indeed.
