Release Notes:
Julia Anne McDougall has a very innovative contemporary style, which is coupled
with wonderful piano to vocal harmonics. Her influences range from Simon and
Garfunkel and Joni Mitchell to Eliott Smith and Coldplay, and it shines through
with vibrant originality.
Julia was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. When she was six years old, she was
surprised to find an irregular shaped present with a big red ribbon beneath the
Christmas tree. The present was a small piano, and Julia took a loving to it.
She began taking music lessons that year, before moving to Saskatoon at age
eight.
It was in Saskatoon where Julia began to discover her other profound love:
singing. However, upon joining the children's choir, she quickly realized she
was not cut out for group sing alongs, as she was made fun of due to the strange
way she would curl her lips, and was cut down for it. Wrestling with the group
harrassment of her puckered lips until age ten, she moved to the armpit of
Saskatchewan, a tiny farming community known as Torquay. There she met her three
best friends, of which a band was attempted (yes, at age ten) but as well was
unsuccesful, as there was very little musical talent.
It was her new appearance in the Torquay choir that had built up better courage
in her singing, as the songs were less conservative, and more to her liking. At
this point Julia had become less interested in traditional piano lessons, and
began creating her own melodies. She stopped taking lessons at age fourteen.
Julia realized if she ever wanted to go anywhere with her music, she would have
to master the art of performance.
Her first song played to the public was Wise Up by Aimee Mann in front of the
student body at her school's talent show. The next year, she played again in a
duet with her best friend Branden Bayda, who both shared a profound musical
interest. The composed song was entitled "The Classic Break-Up Song," and had
some success. Julia was asked afterwards to play at a coffee house at the
Estevan Art Gallery, which Julia accepted, and had composed two new songs to
play.
After that, everything had taken off. She had began opening for local shows,
began meeting new people, and creating a fan base. Right before Julia had turned
sixteen, she had recorded her first demo, called Make My Heart Thump, at Beck
Studios in Saskatoon. Make My Heart Thump is the humble beginnings of Julia's
musical creation. It involves five tracks of pure emotion, through catchy, heart
felt melodies. She had a couple shows in which she had met the former band
Prevail, who had introduced her to At Birth Given Scars. Afterwhich, Prevail and
At Birth Given Scars had invited her on a spring tour with them, and that is
when Julia had found where she truely wanted to be. She met many new people, and
has now nearly completed her second demo, entitled 'Flight'.
She now has alot ahead of her. She plans to tour as much as possible, completing
the dream, and will continure to forever hold a future in music. (Oh, and for
anyone who cares, she took violin lessons.)
