Three tracks from three of the most interesting musicians
operating in Europe and one of the most inventive groups to
appear in the improvised music scene in recent years.
Together, Bernhard Gunter, Graham Halliwell & Mark Wastell
form +minus, with now on Esquilo their third release.
The first number in the Variant Series is a very special
presentation: each musician re-works the group's soundworld
adding new dimensions to it. The pieces, either resultant from
post-recording on un-released live recordings of +minus or the
virtual assemblage of the band based on each musicianÆs
individual work, are all different - and different from their
previous records on trente oiseaux. The whole works perfectly
giving a sense that the music included in this record could
have emerged naturally from one of the bandÆs encounters.
This edition comes in a red deluxe gatefold cardboard case
with silk-screened original art and a short description of
each track by the musicians themselves.

BERNHARD GUNTER, born 1957, in Neuwied, Germany. Starts
playing drums at 12; changes to electric guitar at 17. 1980,
moves to Paris; attends lectures by Pierre Boulez at IRCAM and
CollΘge de France, and works in the libraries of IRCAM and
Centre Pompidou, studying contemporary compositional
techniques. Provides music to the Ensemble Choreographique de
Vitry several times. 1986, returns to Germany. 1987, starts to
work on music using the computer. After four years of
preparation and one year of work, he releases his influential
first CD, "Un peu de neige salie" (listed in "Top 100 Albums
that set the World on Fire", in THE WIRE). 1995 he founds his
label TRENTE OISEAUX. He has since released a substantial
number of full length CDs, and taken part in compilations on
both TRENTE OISEAUX and other labels.
He has played numerous concerts all over the globe. His music
has often been played at the Futura Festival de Musique
Acousmatique in Crest, France, and one of his works has
received an Honorable Mention at the 1999 PRIX ARS
ELECTRONICA. In October 2002 an eight-channel sound
installation was presented at Diapason Gallery, New York. He
is now part of +minus with Graham Haliwell and Mark Wastell.
The trio is now releasing its third CD and has performed a
number of concerts together. He has recently released a
collaboration CD with Heribert Friedl (Austria) that will be
followed by a sequel in Spring 2006. He is currently preparing
collaboration projects with Chris Bryan (Canada), Michael
Vorfeld (Germany), and Steve Roden (USA).
MARK WASTELL has been active in contemporary music since 1995,
making his initial concerts with the trio IST (with Simon H.
Fell and Rhodri Davies) and Chris BurnÆs Ensemble. He is
currently a member of a number of leading ensembles including
The Sealed Knot (with Rhodri Davies and Burkhard Beins),
+minus (with Graham Halliwell and Bernhard Gunter), Sakada
(with Mattin and Eddie Prevost), The Scotch of St. James (with
Tim Barnes), Open (with Phil Durrant and Matt Davis) and
Broken Consort (with Rhodri Davies). He has collaborated with
numerous musicians including Otomo Yoshihide, John Tilbury,
Lasse Marhaug, Toshimaru Nakamura, John Zorn, Sachiko M, Keith
Rowe, Evan Parker, Annette Krebs, Taku Sugimoto, David Toop
and Derek Bailey. Mark has performed at many international
festivals and toured extensively throughout the United
Kingdom, mainland Europe, Scandinavia, America and the Far
East. His recording output to date exceeds forty-five
published releases on a variety of labels which include
Confront (UK), Erstwhile (USA), Trente Oiseaux (Germany),
Incus (UK), Meniscus (USA), Hibari (Japan), Absinth (Germany),
Rossbin (Italy), w.m.o/r (Spain) and Absurd (Greece).

playing, not so much a series of mannerisms as a resistance
thereto; his general concern with abstraction, stripped-down
gestures, and resonation is one he brings to any playing
situation, melding his approach to the moment rather than

very vivid impression of warmth, of stillness, of deep browns

GRAHAM HALLIWELL focus on the saxophone, amplified saxophone
and feedback saxophone and has recorded and performed with
artists as diverse as Rhodri Davies, Matt Davis, Mark Wastell,
Taku Unami, Bernhard Gunter, Richard Chartier, Eddie PrΘvost,
Simon Fell and Simon Vincent. He is currently a member of
+minus, VHF and a new trio with Eddie Prevost and Mark
Wastell.
His primary influences are the music and writing of Morton
Feldman, the experimentation of Alvin Lucier, Pierre Schaeffer
and Eliane Radigue, and the visual art of the American
Abstract Expressionists.
He has recently released Recorded Delivery on Confront
featuring collaborations with Rhodri Davies, Steve Roden and
Mark Wastell exploring the nature of interference tones using
improvisation, sound collage and overdubbing. Current
recording include recording projects include new +minus
material with guest artists Clive Bell, Steve Roden and
Toshimaru Nakamura. The new VHF album will be released by
L'innomable this autumn.
