Hidden Forces - Close To You
Hidden Forces hail from Washington D.C. and kick off Epidemic
Recordings with a massive release titled "Close To You". The
trio are versed with a background in music, and transfer their
skill to create one of the hottest breakbeat releases going
around at the moment. Remixes come from Jason Craig and Jeff
Malcolm under the Infleunza guise, and Malcolm solo as Psidream.
The Original Mix sports a heavy breakbeat with a foundation
built upon heavy synths which build up a solid mood. The track
finds a perfect balance between being a peak time monster and an
emotive composition. A blissful female vocal makes appearance
throughout, and complements the already magnificent composition
by giving it that extra burst of emotion which takes it to the
next level. This is certainly one of the hottest "true"
breakbeat tunes I have heard in a long time, and comes with my
tried and tested seal of approval. A true crowd worker for the
peak moments of a set.
The Influenza guys get down and dirty on their interpretation,
which rips up the synths and gives it a feel which is both
cheeky and haunting. The finer elements of the Original make
their appearance in the upper ranges of the composition, but the
primary focus of the remix is on tough percussion and absolutely
storming low-ranged synths, tracing the melody of the Original.
Any breakbeat lover would be foolish to pass this one up.
The final mix comes from one half of Influenza: Psidream. The
mix is a hectic drum and bass interpretation, and for me it
didn't quite capture the emotion which the former two held. I
found elements of power hard to distinguish from random
craziness, however the breakdowns throughout added an element of
depth, and perhaps true fans of drum and bass will find what
they are after here. But be creative guys, I slowed this one
down and got an interesting breakbeat happening, so play around!
The Original Mix is certainly my pick here, with the Influenza
Mix following very closely. Whilst the Psidream Mix didn't hold
any personal appeal, the score I gave the release should
indicate how little this detracts from the release as a whole,
and I'm sure it holds a lot of appeal in the right hands. A lot
of labels give us decent releases to begin with, and later on
down the track explode with a masterpiece. It seems Epidemic are
out to break that trend with one of the greatest "true"
breakbeat releases I have heard in a great while. I use the term
"true" to differentiate between the more progressive edged
breaks, and this style of breaks. If the style holds any appeal
to you, do yourself a favour and pick this release up.
