│║ The sultry tones of David Coverdale are an ║ │
│║ essential part of my life. From the Deep Purple ║ │
│║ and early Whitesnake played by older relatives ║ │
│║ to his bombastic reappearance in1987 with a new ║ │
│║ line-up, versions of Crying In The Rain and Here ║ │
│║ I Go Again (from 1982Æs Saints and Sinners), new ║ │
│║ hair and Tawny Kitaen in the music videos. It ║ │
│║ was earth shattering in my pre-teens. When Slip ║ │
│║ of The Tongue (featuring ex-Zappa and David Lee ║ │
│║ Roth) æstunt-guitaristÆ Steve Vai launched with ║ │
│║ even more flamboyant style, I was delighted. My ║ │
│║ cassette, personally recorded from BBC radio ║ │
│║ live from Donnington (1990) was a treasured ║ │
│║ possession. His work with Jimmy Page and the ║ │
│║ live performances were tremendous, hawking back ║ │
│║ to a bluesier, more organic vibe before ║ │
│║ returning with WhitesnakeÆs Restless Heart in ║ │
│║ 1997 which was intended to be a solo album. The ║ │
│║ touring did not end and Good To Be Bad (2008) ║ │
│║ was a triumph with a superb lineup. Forevermore ║ │
│║ didnÆt quite tick all the boxes for me ║ │
│║ personally, but after their 40th anniversary ║ │
│║ tour they are back with Flesh & Blood. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The marvellous Reb Beach is still on board and ║ │
│║ is regarded as bandleader and has co-written ║ │
│║ five tracks, but Joel Hoekstra (who joined for ║ │
│║ The Purple Album, the Deep Purple collection) ║ │
│║ co-wrote six numbers with Coverdale. The legend ║ │
│║ that is Tommy Aldridge is miraculously still on ║ │
│║ drums as the longest serving member of the ║ │
│║ myriad line-up changes of the greatest rock ║ │
│║ musicians available to quite possibly still the ║ │
│║ greatest voice in rock. ║ │

│║ Good To See You Again opens with a classically ║ │
│║ sounding Whitesnake riff, itÆs good to hear you ║ │
│║ again! Upbeat, engaging, somewhat sleazy, bluesy ║ │
│║ with that unmistakable voice. ItÆs a great kick ║ │
│║ off. Gonna Be Alright and I have faith; the ║ │
│║ guitar has a hint of 90Æs Seattle grunge style, ║ │
│║ but not overtly so- giving an unique flavor to ║ │

│║ of lead single Shut Up & Kiss Me with its ║ │

│║ Hey You (You Make Me Rock) was released last ║ │
│║ month and is a heavier, sleazier beast of a ║ │
│║ track with hints of ædesert rockÆ or old school ║ │
│║ AIC crossed with (dare I say it, Def Leppard!) A ║ │
│║ little suggestive of the reimagined 87 version ║ │
│║ of Crying In The Rain in its emotiveness. It is ║ │
│║ a quality number and delivered expertly. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Always & Forever has an even deeper old school ║ │
│║ feel (Slide It In era), itÆs unexpected and a ║ │
│║ delicious delight. Feelgood, with a hint of ║ │
│║ cheesiness, without being over the top. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ When I Think Of You (Color Me Blue) commences ║ │
│║ with a 70Æs bluesy riff (slightly reminiscent of ║ │
│║ Mott The Hoople) which is sweet, without being ║ │
│║ saccharine for a slower tempo ballad. Lighters ║ │
│║ aloft and listen closely for those sighs (from ║ │
│║ the Cov and adoring female masses!) ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Trouble Is Your Middle Name sirens wail and a ║ │
│║ delightfully raunchy, bluesy guitar introduce a ║ │
│║ pumping blowout of a song. The guitar solos are ║ │
│║ simply magical and certain to get you smiling! ║ │
│║ (If you care as much as I do, here you go: Reb ║ │
│║ BeachÆs solo: 1:38-1:55; Joel Hoekstra solo: ║ │
│║ 1:56-2:25; RebÆs outro solo: 3:35-4:07. With ║ │
│║ thanks to Hoekstra for posting!) The title ║ │
│║ track, Flesh & Blood is a mid paced stomper, ║ │
│║ simple enough lyrically for even the most ║ │
│║ cider-sodden festival reveller to chorus (I look ║ │
│║ forward to joining the horde!) ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Well I Never brings us back to the down and ║ │
│║ dirty, with the primal percussive throb of ║ │
│║ Aldridge driving the party. Heart Of Stone drops ║ │
│║ the pace for a darkly moving ballad. Get Up ups ║ │
│║ the pace and gets the party in full swing, the ║ │
│║ harmonised backing vocals somehow add a ║ │
│║ different dimension. After All starts with a ║ │
│║ delightful classical guitar and is gloriously ║ │
│║ pared back and gentle in its almost folk rock ║ │
│║ style. The vocal work is sublime. Sands Of Time ║ │
│║ closes the album in majestic Whitesnake style ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ This is a spectacular return to form, this could ║ │
│║ have easily followed Slip Of The Tongue. The ║ │
│║ production is wonderful and the music is great. ║ │
│║ This is unashamedly and unmistakably Whitesnake. ║ │
│║ The perfect antidote to the grimness of reality. ║ │
│║ Grab onto Flesh & Blood with both hands and ║ │
│║ enjoy the ride ║ │
