VΣrttinΣ are Finland's best-known roots band. Distinguished
by an energetic and compelling sound with ingenious
arrangements, complex rhythms and outstanding musicianship
the music is dominated by powerful female vocal harmonies
pinning you to the back of your seat one minute, haunting and
delicate the next. For over 20 years the group have toured
the world, made platinum-selling albums and won numerous
accolades for their unique blending of ancient Finnish
'runno' poetry in a contemporary context.
The focus of Miero ("Outcast") is voices and features some of
the darkest, most sinister themes yet from Varttina's
lyricists! Miero songs include tales of a mothers murder of
her children, lies, deception and betrayal, curses, serpents
of death, sin, pestilence and suffering. Yet there are also
tender songs of love and silence. Miero is a song journey
from start to finish.
(It is not at all surprising that Varttina were approached
in 2003 to create the music for the $ 27million stage version
of Lord of the Rings along with Bollywood composer A H Rahman
(Bombay Dreams) and Chris Nightingale. Finland's famous
Kalevala epic poem, compiled from ancient runes, originally
inspired JRR Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth and the elfin
tongue.)
