"Kan Mikami's 1972 Kochi University Live has long circulated in
fan circles and is whispered to be one of the most powerful

University in front of a crowd of hyped-up wannabe student
revolutionaries, Mikami breathes raging white-heat into a set

"Unbelievably powerful/emotionally affecting live set from
Kochi University in 1972. This has been doing the rounds of the
Mikami inner circle for a few decades now and has long assumed
semi-mythic status amongst fans of pugilistic revolutionary
folk/blues. Recording quality is cassette tape rough, adding to
the overall samizdat feel of the package, and the crowd is
absolutely nuts, punctuating Mikami's throat-pomes with screams
and waving pistols. The whole set provides a great snapshot of
the Japanese underground at some kind of apex of insurrection
and Mikami has never sounded quite so much like a channel for
alla the vicarious desires and energies of his audience. The
recording space has a claustrophobic, cavernous feel - like a
long subway tunnel - and his vocals flash across the crowd like
headlights in fog, playing the echo for blots of epiglottal
nuance. For the most part the songs are weird polyglots that
mix variously construed reconstructions of northern Japanese
folk, re-wired delta blues and classic 60s rock traditions in a
way that feels just *right* but there are many moments where
Mikami seems to leave the entire canon behind, working the more
savage contours of his material into wild assemblages of pure
now. This is Heather Leigh's all-time favourite Mikami
recording, and it may just be yours too. Comes in a special
hard card gatefold sleeve with a beautiful colour painting of
Mikami by fellow folk spirit Kazuki Tomokawa. Limited edition
