The freak flag hangs half-mast in the land of sandals and toe-rings. So many
bros, so little time. San Luis Obispo needs a new sound of its own. Nursed at
the teats of feedback and finesse, Red Lights harken back to the days when
passion in music did not mean "let me lick your toes" love-jams or "let me show
you my heart tattoo" seventh-grade diary outtakes. Singer James, guitarist Ryan,
and bass-player Shawn met during a particularly warm season in retail hell. They
soon revealed their mutual admiration for bent notes, b-sides, and beer. They
played shows, bad ones, but learned the valuable lesson: You get what you give.
One night, while frequenting their favorite local dive, they came upon a man
playing the drum solo from Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight" on a set of empty
coffee cans. This man, who likes to call himself "Eric," was given a set of
sticks and pointed in the direction of le baterie. Ryan was out one night doing
research for his "Guide to the 100 Worst Open-Mic Nights on the Central Coast"
when he heard the screams of ecstatic women coming from a nearby cafe. He
entered to find Ross playing the soundtrack to "Edward Scissorhands" on the
piano, with his toes. Tired of all the physical demands of female fans, Ross
enlisted for Red Lights immediately. While in the Sierra Nevada mountains for a
clothing-optional men's retreat, a stranger wandered in to the Red Lights camp.
He came from Reno with nothing but a gold-miner's tin and an old Rickenbacker
guitar. His name was Jim, and he seemed to know a lot about squids and the
ancient eastern practice of Tu Ning. The secret initiation ritual soon ensued.
Red Lights are now recording their first album. They have been mostly confined
thus far to California's Central coast, opening shows for touring bands like TED
LEO, NORFOLK & WESTERN, THE NATIONAL, THE TALLEST, CALEXICO, NEKO CASE, DIOS,
THE FRENCH KICKS, and M.WARD. Please introduce yourself to them, and keep the
dreams of the non-tanned Californians alive.
