Jalapeno Recordings unleash the third studio album from the hottest (see what we
did there) stars of the lounge-hop scene, Skeewiff. A welcome antidote to the
thumping sounds of main room bass bins this compilation features a substantial
dose of Northern Soul and Mod Classics.
The album features a few collaborations, with æTriumph StagÆ featuring the
keyboard talents of Alan ôThe Hawkö Hawkshaw and æLove PowerÆ featuring the
sweet vocals of Charlise Rookwood. Other tracks æWet Your BeakÆ is an ode to the
joys of drinking and features a thirties boogie-woogie piano man and the clever
remake of æMan of Constant SorrowÆ, which originally came about as a live mix
dropping the accapella from the ôO Brother Where Art Thouö soundtrack over some
Skeewiff beats.
With a longtime penchant for Northern Soul and 60s mod classics, the music
Skeewiff (Alex Rizzo and Elliot Ireland) present is sexy, well-tailored and
opulent, itÆs a little peacockish and drenched with colour. Think Shag, think
Propellerheads, think Millie Jackson. Returning now with another lavish
collection, æPrivate FunktionÆ is everything you want in velvety grooves and
fancy-pants funk.
Mixing big beat, jive, eastern and jazz, this album is very cosmopolitan with a
wicked sense of humour. It opens with glorious cinematic strings and swinging
jive rhythms (Smash and Grab), which later meet with swaggering guitar riffs
(Giggity), rolling basslines (Light the Fuse, Man of Constant Sorrow), twinkling
keys (Triumph Stag) and smoking grooves (Husky). Skeewiff regulars Steve Murray
and Peter Martin shine on vocals and bass, as does singer Charlise Rookwood who
is ever so gloriously strong (Love Power), and Alan æThe HawkÆ Hawkshaw is at
his always best on keyboards.
Just like that perfect martini, æPrivate FunktionÆ, is to be savoured to the
very last drop.
