They Shoot Horses Don't They? are a self proclaimed hillbilly rock band from
Vancouver. The group formed in 2003 after a series of noise freak out sessions
in a fellow art student's attic. For the first couple of years of their
existence TSHDT? were more of an open ended collective, but have since
stabilized with their current seven person line up, each bringing their own
unique musical perspective to the table to create the group's different and
sometimes wacky sound.
Boo Hoo Hoo Boo is the band's first full length recording which is slated for
release this coming February. Having never heard the band's first EP, TSHDT?
were brand new for me and I was impressed after a single listen. To call the
band unique is an understatement, the group is creating music that is
indescribable in terms of today's popular musical genres. Listening to Boo Hoo
Hoo Boo conjures up thoughts of clowns, big tops, and other circus imagery due
to the band's whimsical and energetic sound. The band's instrumental
arrangements are unconventional as well, with the line up including drums, bass,
guitar, keyboard, trombone, baritone, and alto sax.
The album begins with "Empty Head", a track with a catchy, distorted bass line,
spastic screaming vocals, and an interesting percussion section made up of what
sounds like various pots and pans. Next up is "Hiccup", an anthem-like number
with a rapid beat that makes this track a perfect song to play while driving
over the speed limit. Other notable tracks include "Three" a song that has an
old country saloon feel and "LowLife" which features a modern big band sound.
They Shoot Horses Don't They's upbeat tunes are sure to get indie rockers
clapping and dancing around the continent. Listening to Boo Hoo Hoo Boo is an
experience in itself, but one can only imagine what the band brings to their
live show. The group is known for their quirky stage antics and have a habit of
treating every object on stage as a percussion instrument. They Shoot Horses
have already made their way across Canada once and plan to hit the road again in
support of Boo Hoo Hoo Boo, so keep your eyes peeled for They Shoot Horses Don't
They? playing western Canadian dates in the near future.
