No one has yet dared to dust down Donovan, that is, until the
Soft Hearted Scientists came rushing in - a bunch of
suburban-dwelling flower children with Beta Band, Paddy McAloon
and deft Edward Lear-inspired storytelling in their veins. This
is their debut album, transmitted from a parallel universe not
far from Cardiff, and aptly titled "Uncanny Tales From The
Everyday Undergrowth". Which turns out to be epic, evocative,
towering, beguiling and mesmerising (non-clichΘ variants of
these rare qualities).
Uncanny Tales collects the 12 tracks from the limited edition EP
releases on Cardiff imprint My Kung Fu so far ("The Wendigo" EP,
"The Bethesda" EP and "The Midnight Mutinies" EP) with a lyric
booklet and new artwork. Soft Hearted Scientists' musical agenda
uses guitar, piano, drumbox, jaw harps, pots, pans and combs,
all to fantastic effect. Along the way, you'll get a cosmic
invite on "The Petition", visit some repressed revenge fantasies
inside the "Diving Bell" and stop at the haunted taverna of
"Isabella" for some unexpected words of encouragement. Not to
mention a musical re-imagining of Edward Lear's love poem "The
Yongy Bongy Bo" and many many more...
