The final emission from Darren Durham (a real-life
tongue-twister if we've ever heard one...) under his
Fortdax moniker before disbanding and splitting
himself into an amoeba like slew of new pseudonyms.
Following his last album's propensity to get filed
under 'ambient' (a situation Durham blames on shoddy
mastering), 'Divers' has a simple instruction
festooned within; PLAY LOUDER. Doing just that, what
immediately strikes you is the lack of somersaulting
synths which have tended to be liberally spread
throughout his past work, with opening track '1909
(Pour Mme. Emile Mouillere)' a crackling smog of
tape-hiss 'n' piano which conjures a smoky atmosphere
that is a country mile from the massed ranks of
'ambient'. Into more familiar territory on the
following 'As Birds Angle In', Durham indulges his
love of grandstanding set-pieces; with the gleaming
chords, rubbery drums and fizzing strings coalescing
into something Air would be proud of. Elsewhere,
'Prozess Wolf' is a fidgeting breakbeat-platter in
the style of Radioactive Man's more starry-eyed
output, 'C Conceit, Knot Point, Hanging...' takes
gurgling field-recordings and shackles it to a
mournful piano, whilst 'A Beverly Mythic' cracks open
a much-loved cask of harpsichord and gets busy. Fort
