█ █▓█ Helsinki-based saxophonist Timo Lassy has already █▓█ █
█ █▓█ cultivated a formidable reputation on that city's █▓█ █
█ █▓█ burgeoning jazz scene as a member of The Five █▓█ █
█ █▓█ Corners Quintet live touring line-up, and this █▓█ █
█ █▓█ latest 12" release on Ricky-Tick represents his █▓█ █
█ █▓█ debut offering under his own name, backed by a █▓█ █
█ █▓█ four-piece including members of Five Corners █▓█ █
█ █▓█ Quintet and acclaimed Finnish producer Teddy Rok. █▓█ █
█ █▓█ █▓█ █
█ █▓█ On the A-side of this 12", 'African Rumble' █▓█ █
█ █▓█ blends propulsive, rolling Afrobeat percussion █▓█ █
█ █▓█ with Lassy's Pharoah Sanders-esque horn phrasing, █▓█ █
█ █▓█ sparkling brushed cymbals and warm live bass █▓█ █
█ █▓█ providing a firm rhythm hook as the entire track █▓█ █
█ █▓█ breaks down into some fantastic Chicago █▓█ █
█ █▓█ soul-inspired horn riffing. As well as the █▓█ █
█ █▓█ quality of the musicianship featured, one thing █▓█ █
█ █▓█ that particularly lifts this 12" above many █▓█ █
█ █▓█ similar releases of its type is Teddy Rok's █▓█ █
█ █▓█ inspired █▓█ █
█ █▓█ █▓█ █
█ █▓█ production, which manages to blend close █▓█ █
█ █▓█ attention to detail with just the right degree of █▓█ █
█ █▓█ smoky grime that's missing from many similar █▓█ █
█ █▓█ efforts. On the flip, 'High At Noon' maintains █▓█ █
█ █▓█ the rolling percussive trajectory set by the █▓█ █
█ █▓█ A-side, with vaguely Brazilian rhythms providing █▓█ █
█ █▓█ a firm undercurrent for lazy rolling jazz pianos █▓█ █
█ █▓█ and Lassy's smooth soulful horn soloing - while █▓█ █
█ █▓█ it's certainly the more laidback of the two █▓█ █
█ █▓█ tracks on offer here, it still manages to slowly █▓█ █
█ █▓█ build up into some spectacular saxophone █▓█ █
█ █▓█ pyrokinetics and massed cymbals. █▓█ █
█ █▓█ █▓█ █
█ █▓█ An excellent debut 12" from Timo Lassy that marks █▓█ █
█ █▓█ a strong opening gambit, while also highlighting █▓█ █
