│║ The gang is back together again, more ║ │
│║ specifically the classic lineup of Rhapsody, ║ │
│║ minus Alex Staropoli who has gracefully carried ║ │
│║ on the "traditional sound" of Rhapsody of Fire. ║ │
│║ This is a whole new sound presented here. it is ║ │
│║ similar to what Luca Turilli has been doing as a ║ │
│║ side project through the years, but any hint of ║ │
│║ the old Rhapsody is pretty much gone here aside ║ │
│║ from some classical balladic passages. There is ║ │
│║ no sword or sorcery to be had, no epic key ║ │
│║ solos, in fact anyone who hated Rhapsody in the ║ │
│║ past and called them "flower metal" will have to ║ │
│║ bite their tongue here. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Now I thought Rhapsody of old was powerful and ║ │
│║ certainly not flowery but on this album the ║ │
│║ sound has been beefed up and modernized. Gone is ║ │
│║ Turilli's old single coil neck pickup dirty ║ │
│║ classic guitar tone and enter a fat, crisp, and ║ │
│║ modernly metallic guitar sound. The bass is also ║ │
│║ ratcheted to 11. The sound here is closer to say ║ │
│║ a modern Kamelot but much proggier and much ║ │
│║ riffier. Turilli is all over the place with ║ │
│║ guitar lines on here, probably more in the vein ║ │
│║ of a John Pretrucci. But to go along with ║ │
│║ Kamelot the production value and bombasity is in ║ │
│║ line with the latest Devin Townsend and Ayreon ║ │
│║ releases. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ It still is stylistically Trulli/Lione to a T. ║ │
│║ These two are the main pieces in the Rhapsody ║ │
│║ puzzle and both give A+ performances here. Lione ║ │
│║ puts on a masterclass here, he is an absolute ║ │
│║ virtuoso here, this is a vocal performance for ║ │
│║ the ages. Turilli is handling both key and ║ │
│║ guitar duties and does so admirably. The solos ║ │
│║ here are much more focused than the all out ║ │
│║ shredfests of old Rhapsody and tend not to be ║ │
│║ weighty in the compositions. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The album starts with the 3 single tracks and ║ │
│║ presents a diverse and honestly not overly ║ │
│║ indicative view of what is to come. Phoenix ║ │
│║ Rising is more like a metal opera track think ║ │
│║ Ayreon and DNA is a very Kamelot-esque number ║ │
│║ and easily the weakest on the album. The title ║ │
│║ track is the first indication of what this album ║ │
│║ will be. Prepare to be run through the ground by ║ │
│║ bombastic orchestrations, giant choirs, cosmic ║ │
│║ arpeggios, and lots of double bass. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The rest of the album is where the meat is, and ║ │
│║ a giant dose of Fabio Lione spilling his guts ║ │
│║ out in many different varying ways form ballads ║ │
│║ to more classic progpower numbers. There is a ║ │
│║ tasteful inclusion of DGM vocalist Mark Basile ║ │
│║ as well on the album's "epic" track I Am. The ║ │
│║ fact that they restrained themselves to the ║ │
│║ longest song being 07:15 just shows the maturity ║ │
│║ of Turilli's songwriting. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The weakness in the album is the inclusion of ║ │
│║ the one filler orchestral track as well as the ║ │
│║ song DNA. If they would have swapped DNA out ║ │
│║ with a similarly crowd pleasing anthem in the ║ │
│║ vein of Emerald Sword or Holy Thunderforce this ║ │
│║ album would have been perfect. The lack of a ║ │
│║ speedy power metal anthem on this one certainly ║ │
│║ hurts it and the inclusion of DNA which is a ║ │
│║ flabby symphonic metal song in seemingly it's ║ │
│║ place is the only thing out of character for ║ │
│║ Rhapsody. Otherwise a job well done. ║ │
