in the second half of the nineties, exotic-driven tracks conquered
metropolitan lounges over a remarkable territory. compilations like buddha
bar or cafΘ del mar, and artists like nitin sawhney and dzihan & kamien
did their best to get the music there.
however, daytime radio listeners mainly missed this cutting edge audio
pleasure. coup debam are now about to change this.
their album kicks off with a clever mix of song and track production:
ôfind meö catches the listenersÆ attention with a driving rhythm loop,
soon joined by barbara bandiÆs vocals and, later on, accented by
captivating string ornaments that blend modern sound with oriental
harmonies.
even as it changes tempo, the album continues this way: a tightly
arranged, cosmopolitan blend of sound, gently avoiding plump exotic
clichΘs and exaggerated world music authenticity. oriental sounds are
always present, but treated as a spice that needs careful handling.
produced with this essential knowledge, you will find some very laid-back
grooves (esta direccion, trackless, seirenes) between the vocal tracks:
cinemascope funk at its best. maybe, too soon is the key track: a duet
like a dream, sung by ╓zden ╓ksⁿz and the expressive madita, who has
already enchanted audiences with her live vocals together with the ôdzihan
& kamien orchestraö, and on the dzihan & kamien album ôgran riservaö û too
soon gradually fades between song and track, radio and club. with coup
debam, opposites just donÆt exist.
aboutà.
in the late nineties, ╓zden ╓ksⁿz and metin yilmaz were part of mc sultan
which worked on a polyglot idea of pop. years ahead of panjabi mcÆs chart
success, the global style mix was doing well in terms of acid jazz û we
should admit that mc sultan had a very wide definition of this genreà.
when sultan-mates vlado and mario went off to score as dzihan & kamien,
╓ksⁿz und yilmaz founded eden, targeting the turkish market. now, together
with wilko goriany they formed coup debam.
the core collaborators are friends, meeting during years of making music,
but coup debam also features vocal newcomer barbara bandi.
