Hanna Hartman is a Swedish sound artist who uses real captured
sounds as raw material for her sonic incursions that can be only
very marginally denominated as music, in the universally
accepted sense of the word. Longitude / Cratere, two long pieces
originally featured as radio broadcasts, both in Sweden and in
Germany, comprise, in the case of the first, recordings made on
sailing boats throughout Berlin, Kap Arkona and the Baltic Sea,
while Cratere is made of sound field captures of the Italian
volcano Etna.
In "Longitude", the maritime references are all over the place,
with typical onboard sounds assembled in a continuum of
tranquility/tempest sequences. 'Longitude' is particularly
intriguing, in the assumption that it unequivocally demonstrates
how earthly and otherwise disregarded objects' sounds (metallic
clattering, waves crashing, hydraulic grind, ropes stretching
noisily), when properly assembled in a specific sonic context,
achieve a remarkably suggestive and evocative strength.
'Cratere' possesses a more furtive temper and presents a
steadier ambience. It follows the same gathering logic of the
first track, yet it fails to have the same appeal and impact.
This can be explained by the fact that in qualitative terms, it
lacks the sharpness of some of 'Longitude''s aspects, and thus
sounds more repetitive, in its continuous flow.
Perhaps it's the authenticity of the sound samples that
contributes the most to the somehow daunting atmosphere patented
in this work. Even considering that the almost muted moments can
dislodge the listener's attention and, at the first spins,
considerably raise the risk of fast-forwarding temptation
(principally in 'Cratere'); this is a stimulating and, by the
aforementioned reasons, atypical compositional take. With
expertise and knowledge, HH's showcases that the startling
sonorities can have their origin in the most unsuspected
sources, and the more the use of explicit and kitschy "dark"
samples is required, the less the artistic outcome will
astonish. While 'Cratere' definitely would have a different
impact if associated with images and/or film, 'Longitude' stands
on its own as a solid sound design exercise, sufficiently
dexterous to have a longer run than its 18 minutes.
