Following her sojourn with Mr Lippok last year,
Berlin Babs is back with a brand new solo LP -
continuing to plumb an idiocentric well of electronic
songwriting that straddles the margins of pop whilst
flirting with the melodious leftfield. Totally
intuitive in it's evolution from 'Nichts Muss', 'The
Grass Is Always Greener' nicely juxtaposes
Morgenstern's often claggy Germanic vocals with a
mesh of pinpricktronica and warm instrumentation.
Stylistically closer to her collaborative venture
'Tesri' than the Pole-produced oeuvre she was
originally embraced for, 'The Grass Is Always
Greener' opens through a trickle of mellifluous
analogue - building towards skittering drums, fizzing
tronics and elements of shoegaze, Morgenstern then
coats it all in a piano/harmony compote that is
simultaneously breezy and piquant in its melancholy.
From here 'The Operator' flips the script completely,
sounding not unlike Ladytron getting grubby with
Stereolab, before 'Polar' brings the serotonin
crashing back down through a perfectly balanced
caucus of treated piano and icy digitalis. Elsewhere,
'Under Mann Aus Hollywood' massages similar elements
into a pathos heavy showstopper, 'Initials B.M.' is a
blossom fall of metronomic piano and cushioned
rhythms, whilst 'Das Schone Einheitsbild' is a
European take on the sound perfected by Japan's
